Welcome to Devon Constituent Body
Devon Rugby Football Union, which was founded in 1877, looks after 65 clubs in the County of Devon, to help promote and encourage people to participate in the sport of Rugby Union.
We have since 1975 been active in the development of our youth and mini game to provide better coaching opportunities for the younger members of our clubs and schools to progress to higher standards than were previously available.
Through our Rugby Development Officer (RDO) we have been proactive in the introduction, to this country, of the tag rugby game as the principal introduction game for both sexes.
We have become regional leaders in the implementation of a Rugby Development Partnership, working to the guidelines set by the RFU. The Devon RDP has fully integrated the schools and clubs into a strong working relationship. The introduction of Community coaches in North Devon and Torridge together with Exeter and Mid Devon has further strengthend our development of young players. A strong young women's game is also developing in most areas of the County. The Devon RDP is in front of the RFU four year programme having achieved almost 90% of the tasks for the coming year, retention of players in the 16+ group by over 50% set against a target of 2% set by the RFU had already been achieved last year and a further increase, in the region of 20%, is expected this year. Similar growth patterns are seen in the number of children playing regularly in schools.
The new Schools of Rugby initiative put into place by the RFU started in 2007. Devon as a CB has been in the forefront of the identification and development of young players. This means that the Schools of Rugby (SoR's) will not be a terrible upheaval for us to implement, unlike other CB's who are having some problems. Devon's RDP working together has provided a sound base from which the new organisation will be able to get on with their job.
