Year Summary 2003
Losing the qualifying round of the senior cup at Darlington didn’t start the season of too well, but winning the first league game away at West Hartlepool followed by a great win at home against Darlington started the league programme well.
Only three wins up to Christmas left us in the bottom part of the league and it was time to get the show back on the road. Fortunately this was followed by three wins which moved us back up the table. The beginning of February showed that the injuries in crucial positions were going to become an important factor - Eliot Laughton (broken jaw) Neil Ryan (groin).
Whilst having a poor time in the league the County cup was a different matter and the blooding of more West Park youth brought us through to the final against Preston Grasshoppers which we narrowly lost 34-31 after playing all the rugby. Everyone played well, with Tom Gray (center) Mark Williams (No. 8.) Daz Wilson (scrum half) Ian Callaghan (standoff) showing the kind of rugby West Park is renowned for. The season overall however was marred by the terrible injury which caused West Park's captain Sean Fletcher to permanently lose the sight in his left eye. This will be a great loss to the Redrocks outfit.
