Year Summary 2005
Playing Wigton, Vale of Lune, Dudley Kingswinford away and losing to Moseley in the Powergen Cup started the season well. But losing the first home league game to Hull reminded us of the long season ahead. Through our links and friendship with the New Zealand Rugby Academy, two young Maoris played first team rugby.
The first team squad average age 23 yrs, and with over half the squad homegrown the season spanned out to be hard and very competitve. The season ended with us being joint third, just missing out on a play-off place.
Our second and third teams were involved in the Fairclough Homes league, which gives lower teams something to play for, and we commend Fred Swarbrick and Reg Robinson for there contributions. Also our `club within a club' West Park Warriors came a commendable fifth in what started as a poor season.
The club is hoping to move forward in the next three years with a development plan to change pitches and hopefully a new clubhouse.
The Junior/Mini sections were equally successful and the club thanks the many coaches and volunteers. It is particularly rewarding to see so many of the Junior section coming through to the senior section. Without these a club like ours would not exist.
The cream of the pudding came when we defeated Preston Grasshoppers in the senior Lancashire Cup. A week later we followed this up by winning the Blackburn 7s beating Leeds Tykes in the final.
