Woking 3 – 20 Wandsworthians (31/01/2009)
This win puts us in clear reach of the top end of the table and sets us in the right direction with momentum.
The game was one of attrition interceded by moments of quick hands and support, mostly on our part. Splitting the two sides was the Dubs tight defensive lines and the first true application of thought into our defensive play this season.
The game began with good possession for both sides, with Woking rumbling the ball upwell through their forwards close to the break down, and then getting the ball out to a good centre. We countered this well with continued phase play and managed to spend a good while in their half. Turning down the three points from a penalty we made a good break through our centres, which enabled Chairman Brockes, in rapid support, to go over for the first try. Woking responded with 3 points 5 minutes later, the only 3 they would get all game.
We continued to dominate in the first half. Losing our starting fly half to injury was a problem but Darren Baker stepped up and played well in his stead. Increasing pressure from backs and forwards, following good kicking from hand by Rob Tindall, gave us a penalty just yards out. The ball was taken off the hands of the scrum half by Jim Grant who bullied his way over the line for our second try of the afternoon. The good spell continued, this time through the backs - some excellent running off the scrum by Ross Haddow set the team off down the blindside and the ball went through a good few set of hands to put us under the posts for the third try.
Half time 3 – 15
The second half was less successful in terms of pressure and points but was a real display of grit and guile in the organised defensive lines used to withstand the Woking attacks. A more solidified unit in the second half, we repelled wave after wave of short side attacks and chased down the quick runners when they broke.
As the game got tighter, discipline deteriorated, giving both teams penalty opportunities. Some poor kicking from their fly half gave us possession and this opportunity was turned into points on the wing to give us a final score and a 3 – 20 win. Stand out performances by the front row in a contentious scrum and the wings who ran with purpose all day. All in well done Dubs.
Match Verdict:
Well fought win, organised defence, good breaks. (Report by Ash Ali, 1st XV Captain)
