Wandsworthians 0 - 35 Old Glynonians (01/11/08)
The result unfortunately matched the conditions, unpleasant and very tough. With the wind and rain preying on every pass we went down to a very well drilled and expansive Old Glynonians side.
From the first kick it looked like we would dominate with pressure on a good kick giving us solid possession in the Glyn half. However, they countered well and brought the play to our 22, where it remained for most of the first half. Every single Dub tackled with ferocity and determination; unfortunately it wasn’t enough to hold them out.
We conceded three tries in a 25 minute period of pressure having given away repeated infringements at the offside line. By half time we were frustrated to be without points having had some good breaks through the forwards, Edd Groves and Dom Brockes, as well as some good kicking from Rob Tindall at full back.
Through the second half the pattern remained much the same. Glyn running lines met good tackles. When the running was met with less than good first up tackling it resulted in holes punched through our defence. They put more points on the board in this manner.
We carried the ball forward well and some good breaks saw us unlucky not to score on two occasions, one in the forwards and one in the backs. Injuries took their toll, yours truly going off and moreover losing Darren Baker and Paul Cooper to more serious wounds.
All in all they played the conditions well and we were unable to adapt or innovate to the territorial game required in the conditions. Solid and determined performances by all Dubs ensured we had some opportunities.
Match Verdict: Fair result. Not able to innovate in the set plays if we don’t all train together on a Tuesday.
