Wandsworthians 26 – 0 Egham (13/08/09)
The 80th season of Wandsworthians RFC began the way it should have, with a good quality win against good opposition.
With the players fired up after a minute silence for departed Dub Reg Sparkes, we were ready to show all the Dubs watching what we are about this year. From the first whistle the Dubs were the side on the offensive, with powerful runs being made by backs and forwards alike. The first 10 minutes made a clear statement of how we intend to play for the rest of the season.
Some early pressure through quick breaks from the centre gave the Dubs consistent territory and a lengthy period pf pressure in the Egham 22. Continued pressure through the forwards showed strength and ambition up front but the spell was unrewarded. On the following return to Egham territory the forwards made good ground and gave stable ball to the backline. Pace and good hands from the swift back line gave Phil Jerrum the first try in the corner. The kick from Darren Baker ensured a full return for positive play and effort.
Possession and attacking guile was not all Wandsworthian. Some Dubs indiscipline in the face of rather questionable decisions and Egham’s quick breaks, particularly through the centre, gave them a period of prolonged possession. This was sent back by some stern first up tackling from our backs forcing them to make a series of errors. The next highlight saw Jamie Smith glide over from 15 yards out after a fine break and stable ball presentation by the forwards.
14-0 at Half Time.
A reflective and steely half time discussion highlighted the importance of the first score of the second half. We achieved just that after a period of regular pressure provided some outstanding individual runs and committed support play. Quick ball from the forwards gave the backs more possession and some excellent hands from the backs, and hooker Dimitri, enabled Richard Pennington to latch on to a deft pass to put us 19-0 up.
A period of Egham pressure was again forced back by a mixture of stoic defending and unforced errors on Egham’s part. Good attacking kicking by Rob Tindall and some direct running by the back row gave us the lion's share of possession in the last 10 minutes of the game. This pressure was capitalised on when Matt Rochester went over to cap off a good all round performance from the team. With the conversion made we were able to celebrate 26 unreturned points in our opening game of the season.
Match verdict: Good win, positive all round performance, much more in the tank. Well done boys.
