Match Report: Wandsworthians 3 – 26 Economicals (15/02/09)
Following a good win against Woking we went into the game with forward momentum, against the top side in the league on the back of their 114-0 win the previous week. They came expecting a big win and minimal resistance. What they got was rather different.
Early pressure was all Wandsworthian. From the kick off we showed that we intended to play rugby that would punch up with support. This kept possession and territory for the first ten. Things evened up after that with tackling from both sides preventing points being scored. Economicals were clearly rattled by the determination in the tackle we displayed and the breaks made from backs and forwards.
They broke the deadlock following 5 minutes of excellent 5 yard defence from our lines and went 5 – 0 up. We swiftly countered with numerous breaks led by Jamie Smith and good running back lines. The forwards put together good phase play and we capitalised on good field position to convert a penalty, 5-3. The pressure continued into half time from the Dubs with good scrummaging and pressure applied from the back row. The game was too close to call but the Dubs had rattled the opposition and exposed their fragmented, individualistic style of play through the unity we displayed as a unit.
Half time Wandsworthians 3 – 5 Economicals.
After half time the play continued in much the same vein for the first 15. Solid Dubs defiance mixed with quick breaks but still no score from either. However, Economicals they began to apply a solid period of pressure that had us pinned to the line for 5. After continued and disciplined defence the line eventually broke and they went over for their second try. This then opened the door for a period of loose first up tackles that allowed them to cross twice more.
The rest of the half saw good re-grouping and shaking off the loose spell. We regained possession and momentum and were unlucky not to score, some good breaks from Ross and others going unconverted. We finished the game with 14 following a sin bin but camped in their 22 and forcing them to defend until the last.
Match Verdict:
We matched and outplayed them at points for 75 minutes. They arrived expecting a stroll and won’t have that mentality again when they come to the lands. (By Ash Ali, 1st XV Captain)
