Economicals 53 – 12 Wandsworthians
A shortened dubs line-up took to the field on a hot October day ready to take on whoever we had in front of us. The commitment shown by the team to be there and ready to represent the badge was admirable as was it throughout a disappointing match.
From the beginning the Economicals showed that winning three out of three before was no fluke, displaying quick hands and running clever lines. We were unable to bring them down or take them off their momentum and were 20 points plus down within 20 minutes.
We ran the ball well when in possession and continued to put them under pressure for much of the remaining 20 minutes. Good running by the back row supported by Ross enabled our backline to get some good ball and send the Economicals backwards in periods. They caught some breakaway possession and scored in the corner, putting them 29 to the good. However, the resilience shown by the Wandsworthians on the day was excellent and we charged right up the middle of them, shoving them off the ball through backs and forwards strength. A solid 8 minutes of pre-half time pressure through the forwards gave Dom Brockes the opportunity to make a typically powerful run just short of the line. Some excellent support and an unstoppable body position put Mark Callis over for a powerful score.
The second half played out much like the first to begin with; constant pressure and heavy defending by the Wandsworthians. The Economicals went over twice more and we were again on the back foot. This time we came back fighting and put solid and contested pressure throughout the second half. Excellent running and passing play between Rob Tindall and Darren Baker saw the backs make headway supported by an angry pack. They didn’t like being run at and we continued up the pitch as the game got more and more ‘lively’ in terms of scuffles.
Having made their subs they had fresh legs but it was the dubs who looked renewed. This renewed energy gave the team much more possession and some excellent running saw Darren Baker go over for a well earned try. We put much more pressure on throughout but were unable to convert. They went over again and the final score was Economicals 53 -12 Wandsworthians.
Match Verdict by Ash Ali: They deserved to win; we’ll smash them at home.
