Wandsworthians 10 – 36 CL London (19/12/08)
Before the game we called for 100% commitment and desire as we prepared for the encounter with the top team in the division. I am proud to say that this was met and exceeded.
Yes the result doesn’t tell a positive story but looks are deceiving. But for 3 minutes in each half, where we were not on top of our game, the narrative could possibly have reached a different end. Throughout a very good game of rugby the Dubs tackled, rucked and mauled with spirit. We had most of the possession in the second half and but for their good defence we would have had more points on the board.
The first half saw two early tries in quick succession from CL London by their impressive centres. They continued to apply pressure throughout the half and were only denied more by some excellent commitment. This commitment was best shown by Paul Cooper who chased down a full back from a great distance and prevented a try that everyone else had assumed was inevitable. The first half continued with pressure applied by both teams. An injury to yours truly, see picture for claret shot, saw John Sidwell come on and play well.
The second half began with two early tries from them. However, we showed what a great side we can be and had most of the possession for the rest of the half. This pressure saw us score twice. One excellent try from continued pressure from the forwards saw Ben Phiilip, who played an excellent game at scrum half, go over and the other a great try from the wing.
Overall this game showed that we are a club. Not a load of good players hashed together with vague links to each other, but a club. We played for the badge and it was excellent to see.
Well done lads and a Merry Christmas to all.
