U16’s v Tavistock – Devon Cup
Teignmouth Under 16’s entertained Tavistock at Bitton Park in the Devon Cup.
From the kick-off Teignmouth laid down the gauntlet with constant pressure, running the ball at every opportunity, and it was not long before winger, Josh Davey, went over for his first try. Play continued in the same format with captain and Number 8, Joe Abbot and Outside Centre, Shaun Bayliss putting their names on the score sheet. Davey also added a further two tries and Jack Saunders kicked 3 conversions.
Tavistock did reply with a converted try for a half time score 31 – 7 in Teignmouth’s favour.
At half time Teignmouth made several changes but still managed to keep their momentum forcing Tavistock on to the back foot. Teignmouth forwards dominated in the loose with Second Row - Nathan Cram – Prop – Mitch Osborne and Flankers – Jake Alison & Henry Burridge standing out.
Eventually after several passages of play, Teignmouth spread Tavistock’s defence and quick ball was recycled enabling centre Kieran Pattison to put a perfectly timed pass to Winger Bryan Nicholls who scored in the corner. By now Teignmouth were running the show with Saunders using his kicking skills to good effect finding space behind Tavistock’s defensive line which resulted in Winger, Sam Simmonds, scoring twice. Saunders added one second half conversion for a final score 48 – 7.
This was great preparation for next week’s Fishermen’s Cup game away to Newton Abbot.
Sunday 20th September '09 - Teignmouth Under 16’s travelled down to Plymstock and came away worthy winners.
Playing their normal expansive game winger, Josh Davey, went over for two tries in quick succession, both converted by fly-half Jack Saunders to take a 14 – nil lead. However, Plymstock heads never dropped and using their heavier forwards began to get into the game resulting in two unconverted tries and a penalty for a half-time score 14 – 13.
The second half was a one sided affair with man of the match Saunders dictating play with a great display of kicking from hand pinning Plymstock back in their own half on several occasions. Teignmouth forwards constantly worked hard to give a steady supply of ball. But the difference between the two sides was Teignmouth’s back division who were full of running. Davey added another two tries and Sam Simmonds on the opposite winger went over for three. Outside Centre, Shaun Bayliss also got on the score sheet after another one of his elusive runs. Saunders added four conversions for a final score 52 – 13.
Their next outing will be Tavistock in the Devon Cup on 4th October at Bitton Park, kick-off 11am. All support welcome.

Teignmouth Under 16’s got their Fisherman Cup campaign up and running with an encouraging win over Kingsbridge after last week’s loss against favourites Ivybridge.
From the outset Teignmouth pressurised at every opportunity varying play between forwards and backs. Eventually it was No 8 and Captain, Joe Abbot, who scored first from close in. Jack Saunders added the conversion from wide out. Teignmouth then continued to spread the ball wide; Centre Jake Monnington and Winger Josh Davey added further tries, both converted by Saunders. However the try of the half was executed by Outside Centre Shaun Bayliss who cut through Kingsbridge’s defence after a well worked move for a half time score 26 – nil.
The second half was a scrappy affair with Kingsbridge getting themselves more into the game cancelling out various attacks and pushing Teignmouth back on several occasions. It was Bayliss again who crossed Kingbridge’s line with another training night set piece, again converted by Saunders. Teignmouth made various changes, one enforced after Monnington left the field with a shoulder injury. Kingsbridge responded with two unconverted tries. However, Teignmouth finished the strongest, from a scrum the ball was spun wide for Winger Sam Simmonds to dive into the corner for a final score 38 – 10.
