Over the seas and round the world
January 2009
I trust you and your Families have all seen the New Year in successfully and of course MADE your NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTIONS.
Although here in Spain it is cold and Sunny, I understand in the UK they are experiencing Minus figures in Centigrade. Brrr Brrr Brrr.
TRFC are back in League Action this week, weather permitting, with a tough away game with Torrington. Torrington have slipped to 3rd position. But I guess it will still be quite a test for TRFC. I thank Will, Graham and Andy for their good wishes prior to Christmas.
The Hunt is on for TRFC Top Try scorers/s. I was hoping for a greater response from those I contacted, who were known try scorers of yesteryear, but so far this is what I know. Andy Monnington scored 12 in 1999/2000 and then followed with 17 in 2001/02.
Chris Tidman scored 25 in TRFC's promotion Season 2006/07.
Top Points scorers include John Mayne with 91 points in 1999/2000 and brother James Mayne with 131 points in 2001/02. However we will all remember that the present Director of Rugby Bob Farrell, scored 338 points in TRFC's Centenary Season 1974/75 a TRFC record.
Please let me know of as many as possible Top Try scorers over the years, whether it is 10 or more and also the Top Points scorers over 100 points or more.
I have John (Nipper) Webber checking the late Les Bennett's records and also David Northcott checking his late Father's records.
Hopefully soon I will be able to share more names from the Past which I am sure you will find interesting.
Thank You for you HELP,
John Rowland.

I do not remember that particular tour to Holland, but I am sure you recall the mighty all conquering TRFC colts of 1984/85. Need to dig out my old club book but I recall we won about 30 of 38 games played. Only losing to the likes of Exeter, Cheltenham and for some odd reason we played Bristol Colts and got stuffed.
Such household names like Sydenham, Rosser, Spurrier, Broome, Allison, Luxton, Noble, McAlister, a certain Terry Veacock on the other wing and some young stringy lad called Rob Simmonds (Who I recall turned into a rather useful back row forward alongside his older brother). As I recall very few made their way on into the first team, with the usual excuses of University, Work, Women or just drifting away from the game tacking there heavy toll.

Hola Everybody,
Well TRFC could not have had a better start back in Devon 1. They have comfortably won their first 5 games and are now equal top with Torrington, but with a far superior points difference. Both these teams meet early in November which will give a clear indication of TRFC prospects this Season.
Yesterday away from the pressure of League games, TRFC played at Home to Minchinhampton, Gloucestshire in the EDF Energy Junior Vase winning by a massive 83 - 0 yes 83. I certainly cannot remember TRFC ever winning by such a margin. Perhaps you can let us know any other very large scores over the years. I am sure the future games in this Competition will become much more closer.
Soon we can also look forward to Martin Johnson's England when they take on first the Pacific Islands, then Australia, South Africa and New Zealand on home soil without Wilkinson.
Some comments from you would be appreciated whether it's about TRFC Rugby, your Club Rugby and some of the exciting things happening in your life.
Keep in touch,
John Rowland.
