Barcelona played at Teignmouth on Saturday 5th October 1963 and Teignmouth won 16-6. John Rowland and Ken Rose both from Dawlish scored the only tries with Graham Nicholson kicking 2 conversions and 2 penalty goals. The match was arranged following Son Darke a former Chairman TRFC talking with Spanish people whilst on a visit.
It attracted one of the largest crowds seen at Bitton Park. The return visit was on the 10th/ 15th October 1964 when Teignmouth participated in a Tournament with Barcelona. Against French Naval side and Teignmouth, which we lost.
People like Walt Rogers, Brian Etheridge, Richard Mole, Norman Harris, the late Peter Nathan, and Son Drake were all members of that party. John Rowland and Roger Hook who had driven down from Paris met them in Barcelona. As a result of these fixtures the Barcelona Cup was introduced and presented for the first time to Vinnicombe at the end of the 1964/65 Season and yearly since.
