Under 9s Sudbury Festival – 20th April 2008
Sudbury Under 9s were drawn in Pool 1 against Woodbridge, Hadleigh and Stowmarket. The first game against Woodbridge was very close and finished in a 1-1 draw, with Lewis Howard scoring the Sudbury try. In the second match, Sudbury lost 5-2 to Hadleigh, with the two tries coming from Jack Edwards and Kieron Hookway. Despite some excellent tackling during the pool stage from Ollie Prout, Charlie Osborn and Tom Baslington, Sudbury ended up progressing in the plate competition.

Another close game, but Sudbury put out a strong team who played well to overcame Bury with a single try from Jack Edwards.
Plate Final: - Sudbury 1- 0 Hadleigh

Sudbury U12s make it four in a row
Sudbury U12s made it four years in a row at the Sudbury mini rugby festival on Sunday.
The team now playing as U12s had won their age group tournament at this festival for the last three years, first as U9s, then U10s and last year as U11s and this was the last time they would compete here together as minis before moving up to youth rugby next season. Of course they wanted to finish with another win - but it would not be easy. Last season they had narrowly defeated Cambridge in the final under cloudless skies on a baking hot April day. This year the weather was ideal for rugby with rain overnight softening the pitch and a mild spring day.
Sudbury were drawn in a pool with Clacton, Cambridge and Woodbridge. Sudbury U12s had never met Clacton before, as Clacton only recently formed a mini rugby section; Clacton competed hard but Sudbury's greater experience tackling, passing and at the ruck told and four tries were run in, by Thomas Littlewood, Toby White, William Levett and Austin Beckett. The next match was against Cambridge who had provided strong opposition in the contest last year, and the first half was strongly contested but without score. Sudbury had come close several times in the first half, in the second half the opposition was worn down and Sudbury scored four tries - William Levett, Louis Boydell and twice by Austin Beckett. The final pool game was against a much improved Woodbridge team. Already certain of qualification, tries by Jack Davies and Louis Boydell ensured victory for Sudbury and a place in the semi final as pool winnner
Sudbury faced Ipswich who were runners up in the other pool in the first semi final. Although Ipswich were strong and disciplined, Sudbury tackled hard, rucked solidly and ran strongly with the ball, and always looked likely victors. Tries by Ben Murphy and William Levett ensured a 10-0 victory and a place in the final. In the other semi final Colchester beat Cambridge by three tries to nil. So the final would be against Colchester, the "old enemy", who were unbeaten in this age group in all forms of competition this season. Just as the final started, the sun came out. The match was played at a furious pace and yet in a great spirit despite both teams wanting to win. Sudbury had the better of the first half, and only rock solid defence by Colchester prevented a score. The second half followed the same pattern and eventually a piece of individual magic from Austin Beckett secured the crucial score. These teams had met four times this season and this was the first outright win for Sudbury - after the final whistle both teams cheered each other loudly in the best traditions of the sport.
All of the Sudbury squad played magnificently, and highlighting individuals was hard - but the coaches picked out Michael Hargrove as player of the tournament for tackling, mauling and rucking, Austin Beckett as top try scorer and Freddie Cox as top tackler. Mention should also be made of the coaches - Giles Clark and Rob Davies, helped by Steve Attridge and Tim Murphy, who have coached this team over the last six seasons and who must take some credit for such a great team performance.
