Stone honour former Captain
16/10/04
Stone RUFC honoured one of their
most influential players since the clubs foundation in 1991 on Saturday. An
afternoon's rugby was dedicated to Dave Taylor, who celebrated his 50th birthday
at the weekend.
Stone entertained
Hanford at their
Tilling
Drive ground and came out as winners,
beating the visitors 31-3. Three
tries from Stone's No. 8 Grant Callaghan and tries for Sam Lainchbury and Ed
Borgman took Stone to a hard fought but comprehensive win with Simon Taylor
kicking three out of five conversions.
Dave Taylor originates from
Yorkshire, where he began his rugby career
playing for his university side. He moved to Stone in 1977, but didn`t return to
playing rugby until joining Stone in 1993.
In 1997 he was elected to Club
Captain, a position he has held until this season, when he handed both his
position (hooker)and the responsibility of the captain over to Matt Cooke.
At the annual players dinner, Dave
has been voted `Clubman of the Year` 6 times on the run for his contributions to
the club and has also picked up the clubs `Old Sod of the season ` trophy twice,
awarded for obvious reasons.
Under his captaincy Stone have
retained the Duncan Gillard Memorial Trophy against local rivals Eccleshall,
were promoted to Staffs division 1 in 1999 and finished 2nd in that league in
2001.
Dave was awarded lifetime
memberships of Stone RUFC earlier in the season, along with Ian Foster, as
recognition for his hard work and loyalty to the club.
Dave has promised to carry on
playing, although on a `whenever needed` basis, Stone RUFC wish they had a few
more players with the enthusiasm and commitment of Dave `T`
