Seconds - 2004/05 match reports
II (68) Vs Hellingly II
(5)
Seaford kicked off this match
knowing that a win and 4 tries for the bonus point was needed to secure the
league championship and promotion to Sussex 2 East.
Hellingly must
be congratulated for making the trip over being 5 players short but with no
other games for
Seaford replacements were soon
found and game commenced.
Seaford were in rampant mood and
the 4 tries were taken within the opening 15 minutes. By the break
Seaford had in fact scored 9 tries and led by 49 points to
nil. The points came from Jason Roberts (4), Skipper, Kevin Woodward (2), Jason
Morgan (2) and one from the influential Simon Bates before he unfortunately had
to leave the field with an injury.
Seaford added a further three
tries in the second period with Andy Nathan, Colin Shearing and Stuart Webb all
crossing the line. Danny Kristiansen added 4 conversions for a final tally of 68
points.
Hellingly
battled well throughout the game and never allowed their heads to drop but it
was a
Seaford player, James Anderson, playing
for the visitors, who scored their well deserved consolation try 5 minutes
before the final whistle.
The game was
also special as it was the final match for Ian Newby. Number 8 Ian, retired from
playing after the game having played for
Seaford for 34 years. Starting his rugby career at
Seaford as a 17 year old Ian has captained the
club and coached them over the years but felt that at 51 it was time to hang up
his boots. His son, Danny plays in the same position and has been to highest try
scorer for the firsts for the past four years. His experience and encouragement
will certainly be missed in the coming seasons.
Robertsbridge (15) Vs
Seaford IIs (7)
Seaford's long
awaited top of the table clash with Robertsbridge turned into an anti climax on
Saturday as both sides struggled with how the game was being refereed. There
were concerns about refereeing and safety from both sides and in a game that
ended two hours and 5 minutes after it started both teams showed good personal
discipline to avoid the game turning into a farce. So worried were the Captains
that they discussed abandoning the game and asking for a rematch but with
neither side sure of the consequences it was decided to continue.
Robertsbridge
scored a penalty and a try in the first half, to lead by 10-0 t the break.
Seaford added a superb try at the start of the
second half with Andy Nathan powering his was over the line with a good run.
Danny Kristiansen converted for the score to become 10-7. With 20 minutes to go
`Bridge crossed the Seaford line again After a good run from their powerful
winger for what turned out to be the final score of the match and a 15-7
victory.
Seaford now
stands 2nd in Sussex 3E but with a game in hand over Robertsbridge
now need a bonus point in their final match in two weeks time against Hellingly
to secure a league championship and with it promotion to Sussex Two
East.
Seaford IIs (32) Vs Newick IIs
(14)
Second placed
Seaford took on third placed Newick in Sussex
Division 3E and had a fantastic 32 -14 victory. Simon Bates was first on the
score card after being released by a good pass from Skipper Kevin Woodward.
Stewart Webb was next up following a magical individual run. Danny Kristiansen
converted one and a penalty attempt and then Ian Newby was at the back of a
rolling maul to score a well worked forwards try to see Seaford lead 20-0 at the break.
Newick came back
into the game in the second half with two converted tries but Newby added
another from a charged down clearance attempt to complete his brace and Steve
Curwen scored Seaford's fifth and final try for a great 32 - 14
victory.
Pulborough II(29) Vs Seaford II (10)
The
seconds opened their game in much the same way as the firsts, losing 24 nil at
the break. The Pulborough backs were proving to be the problem with their pacey
attacks whenever they got the ball. In the second half the Seaford pack started to fire and starved them of the ball.
Chris Cameron and Jason Roberts both crossed for a try each and Pulborough added
another to give a final score of 29-10 to the home
side.
Pulborough
then kept the Ashes with an aggregate score of 47 over the four matches and
Seaford must wait another year before they can
snatch it back.
East Grinstead IV's (5) V's Seaford II's 17
Seaford II's also resumed league action this week with a visit to
East Grinstead. Grinstead's 4ths play in this
league but with their second team home game being cancelled at short notice,
Seaford ended up playing against a team with nine subs from a higher league
rolling on and off at will.
Seaford, with a game plan based on forward dominance were strong
enough to cope and led 12-0 at the break thanks to tries from Rob Hopkins and
Jason Roberts and a conversion from Danny Kristiansen.
The second half was more even as Grinstead started to gain the
advantage as Seaford tired and the 9 subs came on to play. Fantastic defence
from both forwards and backs restricted the home side to just one try with Simon
Bates adding one for the visitors to give a final score of 5-17. A great team
performance to overcome a team with 24 players saw James Boorman names man of
the match.
Next Saturday Seaford 1sts are in league action at the Salts, the
visitors are Uckfield and the Seconds travel to Rye for a friendly.
Seaford II's 25-Uckfield
III's 26
Seaford had a shock defeat this
week when Uckfield III's brought down a first and second team side. In the first
few minutes
Seaford attacked well with a crash
ball to Jason Roberts giving him the opportunity to start the scoring in the
game. This was converted effortlessly by Dan K who also scored a penalty
conversion shortly afterwards.
Uckfield tested Seaford's defence but unsuccessfully gave
Seaford the chance to win the ball back resulting in
another great try by Jason Roberts. Uckfield dominated the game for the next
seven minutes giving them a chance to score their first try and conversion
leaving the half time score 15-7.
The second half continued in the same fashion as the first with both
teams pushing hard to gain the control of the game. Uckfield started the scoring
with a penalty kick.
Seaford attacked well
showing some excellent scrummage skills with Ian Newby splitting from the pack
and diving over the line.
Uckfield grabbed control of the game, despite outstanding defending
from the
Seaford backs, they penetrated their
way through to score a couple more tries and conversions.
Seaford weren't going to give up that easily and performed
a fantastic lineout that gave the ball to Chris Cameron who took it over the
line.
In the last few minutes Uckfield spotted a gap in the
Seaford forwards and ran straight through for the winning
try.
Seaford has a
two-week break now before the next league game.
Seaford II's 64-
Crowborough III's 0
Seaford II's played Crowborough III's for the first time this season
as Crowborough cancelled the first leg.
Seaford
got off to a slow start, playing some of the worst rugby this season. After ten
minutes some input from the wise "oldies" woke the team up. A great move from
the back resulted in the first try scored by Andy Gunstone. This was followed by
a try by Dan Kristiansen, who also converted it. The rest of the first half
continued in a fast pace with three more tries scored by Simon Bates, Jason
Roberts and Jonathan Nimmo along with two conversions.
In the second half
Seaford dominated the
game with some outstanding rugby skills from the whole team. This ended up with
Seaford going over the line five more times.
Jonathan Charles Nimmo scored two of these to complete a hat trick. Also scoring
were Phil Sefton, Skipper Kevin Woodward and another from Andy Gunstone. Four of
the five were superbly converted by Kristiansen. Man of the Match went to Simon
Bates for a brilliant performance on the day.
Seaford are sitting comfortably
at the top of the league with a weeks break before facing Uckfield at home on
the 29th.
Seaford II (15) V's
Robertsbridge (5) League
Seaford
II's, playing the biggest game of the season to date, had a close game and just
came out tops against first placed Robertsbridge.
The
15-5 victory sees Seaford leapfrog the Bridge
to go 1st in the league on level points but just 2 better on the
points difference. Seaford however have a game
in hand and they well may need this if they are to finish the year as champions
as the last match of the season sees them travel to Robertsbridge for the
finale.
In a
very tight match Paul Burns was first on the score sheet after some clever
passing saw him released on the wing. He still had a lot of work to do but
managed to round the last man and bring the ball under the posts giving Danny
Kristiansen the easy 2 points.7-0 to Seaford.
Robertsbridge
upped their game and the pressure finally told when the crossed for a try just
before the break. 7-5.
From
the restart, Seaford began to get some good
driving mauls going against a pack that were, without the front row, a good
stone a man heavier. If you take the front row into account that figure would
probably rise to 5 as the `Bridge front row were the biggest seen at Seaford for many a year.
From
a rolling maul 10 meters out Simon Bates Broke from the side, put in a superb
side step and dived over the line for a wonderful try. The kick was missed but
Seaford kept up the pressure and Kristiansen
converted a penalty with 10 minutes to go to wrap up the scoring at
15-5.
With
Robertsbridge now needing two scores Seaford
defended well until the end and took a well deserved
victory.

Seaford kept
up their winning record and stayed second in Sussex 3 East with a convincing 27
- 5 victory away to Newick.

Seaford II 24 Vs
Pulborough II 7
Seaford
II's kept up their good form, bolstered by the return from injury of Jason
Roberts helping himself to a brace of tries. In a very wet game the Seaford forwards dominated the game and James Boorman
claimed a try from a pushover by the entire pack. Harry Flude added the last
Seaford try and converted two to Seaford take
the victory 24 - 7.
This
was a particularly good performance by the young Seaford pack shorn of much
experience as the elder statesmen visited Twickenham to witness first hand
England's victory over
South Africa.
Hove Fusiliers 0 V's Seaford II 60
Seaford
II's fresh from a superb home 50-0 victory over East Grinstead last week went
one better this week with a trip to Hove. To
come away from this tough assignment with a 60-0 victory was simply
amazing.
The
victory was based very much on the superiority of the pack who completely
dominated their opposition. The Second team pack is very much a blend of youth
and experience and this week it was the experienced that got on the score sheet
with Captain on the day, Simon Bates, Phil Sefton, Ian Newby and Dave Longstaff
all contributing tries.
The
quality ball released to the backs however paid dividends with Man of the match
Jerry `Armadillo' Namabila taking 4 superb tries in a blistering performance.
Matt Sheppard made a welcome return with another well-taken try. Paul Burns
added another as did Harry Flude who also added 3 conversions. Danny Kristiansen
completed the scoring with 2 conversions.
Seaford
should now look forward with confidence to the tough fixture next week at home
to Rye from the
division above.
Seaford II 50 East
Grinstead 0
Seaford
II's returned to league action and showed that the experience gained from
playing the Veterans last week had been put to good use in an excellent 50-point
victory over East Grinstead.
The
game began with Seaford not playing to the best
of their ability; they weren't pulling together as a team. However Kevin
Woodward made a great run, resulting in the first try, converted superbly by Dan
Kristiansen. Jason Roberts followed this up with a brilliant run, knocking many
of the opposition flying to come crashing over the line with the second try.
After
a motivating talk at half time, Seaford came
out looking much stronger as a team. They performed to their full potential,
being the more dominating team throughout the second half. This led to many
tries scored by the following players; Si Bates (1), Chris Burns (1), Harry
Flude (1 try, 3 conversions), Dan Kristiansen (1 conversion). On his debut for
the team Jerry Namabila scored a try, looking like a very promising asset for
the team. Colin "Muppet" Shearing had an outstanding performance resulting in
two tries, which also earns him Man of Match. Another victorious win for Seaford
II's who seem to be going from strength to strength this season.
Next
week they are away to Hove Fusiliers for another league game.
Seaford v Uckfield III
Seaford II's
traveled to Uckfield for their third league match of this season. Having had to
endure a two-week break due to game cancellations, Seaford were obviously
straining at the leash and Uckfield were unfortunately caught in the headlights
of the Seaford juggernaut.
An obviously
weakened Uckfield team having to borrow two Seaford players had no defence from
the first whistle as
Seaford's superior team
drew first blood after only three minutes. "Big" Phil Sefton came crashing over
the line for his first of a brace of tries in a totally one-sided game which saw
Uckfield's III's lose by 73-0.
Other tries were
scored by Dave "Boots" Longstaff (2), Jason Roberts (3), Paul Burns, Ian Newby,
Si Bates, James Bruce, Dan Kristiansen (1 try, 4 conversions) and Andy "Ginge" Nathan who took part in the pre
game warm up in an interesting ensemble which is unlikely to become a popular
choice for rugby training.
Man of the match
was given to Phil "Rowan" Austin on a day when
the entire Seaford team performed superbly, in anticipation of their first home
game next week, which is to be more of a challenge as Brighton travel to the Salts.
Heathfield III (13)
Seaford (37)
The Seconds
traveling to Heathfield and coming away with a 37-13 victory.
Steve Parker
scored his first try for the club after breaking from a rolling maul which went
from the half way line to within ten meters of the line. Jason Roberts, having
recovered from his injury last week, crashed over for the next two tries to see
Seaford lead 15-13 at the break.
The second half
proved to be less tight with Heathfield unable to score. Roberts added another
try to complete his hat trick and Skipper Kevin Woodward made a scything break
from well within his own half to complete the scoring.
With the new
league rules, Seaford were awarded an extra 10 game points as Heathfield had to
play the second half with uncontested scrums
Man of the match
went to Dean Strasser, with a fine performance on his return to rugby but
special mention must be given to Dan Kristiansen, normally a scrum half, who
played a magnificent game at outside center with some great tackles and cutting
attacks.
