Seaford Vs Eastbourne II

Seaford (56) V's
Eastbourne IIs (10) Friendly
When Seaford
traveled to Eastbourne for a match against their seconds in February a hard fought match resulted
in Seaford taking a narrow 13-5 victory.
Simon Baker had
to make a lot of changes to his side but Seaford kept up their recent good form and flowing rugby
produced the side's best victory of the year with a final score of
56-10.
With the Seaford
pack in control the home side were spinning the ball wide at every opportunity
and by half time had crossed the line five times to lead 27 -nil. The four
missed conversions from Ben Cox were an indication of how wide out the scores were rather than
Cox having a bad day with the boot as all were very difficult kicks.
In the second
half Seaford were guilty of sitting back on their lead and allowed Eastbourne two tries early in the half. Seaford eventually pulled themselves out of the rut and
began playing as a team again and the result was another 5 tries to run out
worthy 56 - 10 winners.
Ben Cox and Matt
Evans both scored three tries, Nick Everson bagged a brace and there was one
each for Danny Newby and Andy Booth. Cox added two conversions and Simon Baker
added another.
The down side
from the match was Danny Newby leaving the field with 15 minutes remaining after
he damaged his knee when he fell awkwardly after a good tackle
Although the
score looks like a walk over, the very young Eastbourne side battled well throughout the game and did
not let their heads drop. Given a couple of years they will undoubtedly become
quite a challenging side

Brighton IIs (40) Vs
Seaford IIs (10)
Seaford seconds had another
strange game this week, controlling the game and having 80% of possession but
still managing to lose 40- 10.
The Seaford pack
completely controlled the match and dominated at scrums and line outs but the
home side's half back pairing and inside center cut Seaford's defence to pieces every time they received the
ball.
Brighton scored
4 converted tries to nil in the first half but Seaford tightened up their defence in the second half to
restrict them to two. Jason Morgan scored both of the Seaford tries, the second
a magnificent personal effort, taking the ball deep in his own 22 and sprinting
off down the wing, he evaded 4 tacklers on the way for a try in the
corner.
Phil Austin also
deserves a special mention, playing a rare full match; he looked comfortable
under the high ball, tackled well when called upon and pushed his opposite
number out wide throughout the game.
Next Saturday
the seconds have the final league of the season, at home to Hellingly IIs. A
victory and 4 tries for the bonus point are essential if Seaford is to win the league. Kick off
3pm.

Pulborough (12) V's
Seaford (20) League
After last
Saturdays disappointingly close defeat at home to Crowborough Seaford traveled
to Pulborough in a determined mood. Having lost three games to the opposition
already this season Seaford were also looking for revenge and with both sides on
6 league points the result meant definite safety from relegation.
The game kicked
off with Seaford playing up the steep slope and
for the first 20 minutes they could not get out of their own half. Excellent
defence held the opposition out on numerous occasions but during this period
Pulborough scored an easy try when the ball was spilled in the in goal area
after a bit of confusion in the Seaford back line. The conversion was scored but
Pulborough missed a penalty shortly afterwards to lead by 7 points. Seaford then
started to string together some good attacks and although unable to get across
the line Ben Cox had two attempts at penalties and converted one before the
break for a half time score of 7-3.
With the Hill
now to their advantage Seaford stepped up a gear in the second half and the
score swung Seaford's after a kick through by
Danny Newby saw Paul Burns and Ben Cox both dive on the ball at the same time to
claim an unusual joint try. The conversion was missed but Seaford's confidence was soaring. Only excellent last gasp
defence from the home side prevented Seaford
adding to the score line with Nick Everson looking extremely dangerous whenever
he joined the backline.
Paul Burns broke
the deadlock with a well taken try following a flowing move involving both the
forwards and backs. Cox missed the difficult conversion from corner but
Seaford now led 7-13. With ten minutes to go
Seaford used the forward dominance to good
effect and took a rolling maul trundling down the pitch to within 10 meters of
the line, Harry Flude then broke from the back and darted for the line for a
great try. Cox converted and Seaford now led 7
-20.
Pulborough threw
everything into the final few minutes and were rewarded with a try for their
efforts but it was not enough and Seaford took
a memorable 12- 20 victory.
Next week
Seaford have a friendly at the Salts, against
Eastbourne IIs. Kick off is at 3pm.

Robertsbridge (15) Vs
Seaford IIs (7)
Seaford's long
awaited top of the table clash with Robertsbridge turned into an anti climax on
Saturday as both sides struggled with how the game was being refereed. There
were concerns about refereeing and safety from both sides and in a game that
ended two hours and 5 minutes after it started both teams showed good personal
discipline to avoid the game turning into a farce. So worried were the Captains
that they discussed abandoning the game and asking for a rematch but with
neither side sure of the consequences it was decided to continue.
Robertsbridge
scored a penalty and a try in the first half, to lead by 10-0 t the break.
Seaford added a superb try at the start of the
second half with Andy Nathan powering his was over the line with a good run.
Danny Kristiansen converted for the score to become 10-7. With 20 minutes to go
`Bridge crossed the Seaford line again After a good run from their powerful
winger for what turned out to be the final score of the match and a 15-7
victory.
Seaford now
stands 2nd in Sussex 3E but with a game in hand over Robertsbridge
now need a bonus point in their final match in two weeks time against Hellingly
to secure a league championship and with it promotion to Sussex Two
East.

Seaford (31) V's Crowborough
(35) League
With just
Pulborough away to go in the league,
Seaford were
desperate to win their final home match of the season but in form
Crowborough were also intent on finishing with a flourish.
As is
Seaford's way they opened the game badly conceding a soft
try and penalty in the opening 5 minutes. From then on both sides produced a
thrilling match with real end to end rugby with the lead changing hands and the
result not settled until the final play of the game.
Seaford's response came first from a
good forward break from a line out. The ball was taken up field with the pack showing
good hands and support for Richard Foster to cross for a try. Ben Cox converted,
7 - 8. Paul Burns was next over the line, Harry Flude taking a quick tap
penalty and releasing Burns to dive over in the corner. 12-8. Both sides had
some great attacks and showed excellent defence for the rest of the half but
just before the break Crowborough broke the deadlock with a interception leading to a
converted try. 12 - 15.
Crowborough
extended their lead with an early penalty in the second half before Danny Newby
powered his way over the line. Ben Cox converted to give
Seaford the lead 19 - 18. Matt Garman extended the lead to
24 shortly afterwards as he finished off a great rolling maul to the line.
Crowborough struck back immediately with a well worked try to the corner, 24 -
23.
With ten minutes
to go Seaford extended the lead when Andy Booth crossed following another
quickly taken penalty, Cox converted and
Seaford led 31-23. Again Crowborough struck back with a
converted try of their own to make it 31-30, setting up a frantic final few
minutes.
With two minutes
to go Crowborough were awarded a penalty right in front of the posts and
Seaford felt their luck was in when the
resulting kick was missed. In injury time however Crowborough were awarded
another penalty and while Seaford were still trying to work out why, they took
it quickly and beat the Seaford defence to take the winning try on the final
whistle. 35-31.
A heartbreaking
result for
Seaford but the performance of the
players could not be faulted. Next week
Seaford
travel to Pulborough for the final league game of the season and with both sides
on level points the winning side will finish the year above the
losers.

Lewes II Vs Seaford

March 2005
Lewes II (7) Vs
Seaford (31)
With an away
friendly against Lewes IIs Seaford skipper Simon Baker was again forced to
juggle his side with 4 regular players away on Easter breaks.
Lewes opened the
game continuing their recent good form and within 5 minutes had got on top of
the forward exchanges and cut the backs to ribbons for the opening try of the
game. At this stage Seaford were expecting a
hammering and things were not looking good.
As the game wore
on Seaford realized that they stood a chance
and some dogged defending halted the Lewes attacks in their tracks. After 30
minutes Seaford finally worked their way into the Lewes half and from some good
ruck ball Steve Parker cleaned up loose ball and dived over the line for
Seaford's and Steve's first First
team try. Ben Cox converted and Seaford were
back on level terms. In the closing stages of the half, Harry Flude picked up
from the back of a ruck and spotting a gap in the Lewes defence, raced for the
corner to secure Seaford's second try and a
7-12 lead at the break.
With the start
of the second half the re-jigged Seaford
backline gained the confidence to try some attacks and proved they were more
than capable. First, Andy Booth, playing at fly half, spread the ball wide and
looped to make the extra man. From the half way line it was a sprint to the line
with only the full back to beat. A neat step saw the full back left standing and
Booth free to stroll to the line under the posts. Cox added the two points to
take Seaford to 19 points.
Chris Burns was
next on the score sheet after another wide move saw him racing down the wing
with the full back in front of him and a center closing in for the cover tackle.
A clever kick saw him evade both tacklers and dive on the ball right in the
corner for Seaford's 4th try. Cox
missed the difficult conversion.
With ten minutes
to go Danny Newby rounded off a magnificent personal performance with a pick up
from the base of a scrum to power his way over from 15 meters out knocking three
defenders out of the way in the process. Cox converted this to see Seaford lead 31-7.
The final few
minutes saw Seaford slightly on the back foot,
knowing the victory was secure, but they defended well to deny Lewes any further
scores.
After a couple
of great performances in friendly matches Seaford now need to transfer this form
into league matches and next Saturday will provide the perfect opportunity with
Crowborough visiting for the penultimate league game of the season. Simon Baker
will certainly have some selection headaches this week after a great team
performance.
Seaford IIs were
left kicking their heals on Saturday as Hayward Heath cried off at 1pm on
Saturday. Next week they are also at home with a tough league match against
third placed Newick. A victory could see them take the lead in the league for
the first time this year. Both games kick off at 3pm so the Salts recreation
Ground will be the place to be next Saturday.

Hastings (55)V's Seaford (12) League
With Skipper
Simon Baker struggling to fill places in the team with work commitments and
injuries all around, Saturday was not the best time to visit Hastings. To find them in
top form and putting on a performance that belies their 2nd place in
the league compounded Seaford's problems as Hastings rattled up 36 unanswered points in the
first half.
Seaford's pack has not taken a
backward step all year but were pushed backwards straight from the off as
players were judged to be in front of the kicker and the game restarted with a
scrum. This dominance continued through out the half as the Hastings pack supplied their backs with plenty of
ammunition to cut the Seaford back line to
ribbons. Any ball that Seaford managed to win was slow and scrappy and
Seaford were relieved to hear the half time
whistle.
The second half
started with the strong breeze that Seaford had
just played into dropping completely for the home side. Hastings got off to another flying start clearing up a
Seaford mistake and going over in the corner in
the first couple of minutes to increase their lead to 41.
This appeared to
spur Seaford into action and they came back
into the game in the second half. 50 /50 balls started to go the way of the
visitors and although the result was long gone Seaford restored some pride with two tries. The first from
Pete Joy, crashing over the line after a quickly taken penalty by Harry Flude
and the second scored by Flude after great work from Danny Newby, ripping the
ball from the opposition and releasing Flude for a sprint, evading two would be
tackler, down the blind side wing. Ben Cox converted one to give Seaford 12 points.
Cox put in a
massive performance with some fantastic last ditch tackles but Hastings went on
to add another two tries and took a convincing 55 -12 victory.

Eastbourne III (7) Vs Seaford II (15)
With
the injury crisis sweeping the club Jason Roberts led the seconds to Eastbourne with one player missing. Fortunately,
Eastbourne lent them a player but when one of theirs was injured after twenty
minutes he was recalled and Seaford were one
man down.
Playing
up the slope and into the wind Seaford took a
first half lead of 10 - 7 with tries from Jason Roberts and Andy Nathan. As the
heavy Eastbourne pack began to tire the Seaford
pack began to take control and James Boorman crossed for another try. With 20
minutes to go, Trevor Matthews sustained an injury and had to leave the field
leaving Seaford down to 13 men but the defence
held and they can feel pleased with a great result from a very difficult
match.
| Seaford Vs Uckfield 26.2.05
26th
February 2005
Seaford (17) V's
Uckfield (26) League
When Seaford played Uckfield earlier in the season, away from
home, they lost 25-0 so Saturday's encounter at the Salts was always set to be a
tough fixture.
Uckfield opened
the game by scoring two tries in the first ten minutes to take a 10 point lead
and it looked as though a cricket score was on the cards as Seaford had no answer to the fast flowing Uckfield backs.
Seaford were not helped as a
series of strange refereeing decisions went against them putting them on the
back foot for much of the first half. They did however tightened their defence
and halted the Uckfield scoring until 3 minutes before the break. James
Anderson, after receiving a punch, unwisely retaliated and was spotted by the
ref. He was dismissed, leaving Seaford down to
14 men and giving Uckfield another 3 points to lead by 13 at the
break.
The break
galvanized Seaford and they opened the second
half the stronger even though they were down by a man. It was not to be their
day however, as a break away try from the visitors extended their lead to
18.
Seaford stuck to the task and
restricted the visitor's possession. Pete Joy crashed over for a try, converted
by Ben Cox, followed shortly afterwards by Danny Newby rounding off a flowing
move into the corner. When Jason Morgan powered his was over the line 5 minutes
later Seaford were suddenly just a point down and a major upset looked to be on
the cards.
On a rare
excursion into the Seaford half Uckfield
extended their lead to 21-17 with another penalty but the game was still finely
balanced and could have gone either way. It was not to be Seaford's day however and another breakaway try from the
visitors with five minutes to go sealed the game at 26 -17.
Seaford must learn to start a
game stronger as the early points in the game proved costly in a game that they
could and should have won.
The Seconds did
not play this week as injuries and illness left them without a front row and
unable to fulfill their fixture.
Next Saturday
the firsts have a free week, the Seconds are at home to Hove and the Vets play again at Lewes.
