Crawley (19) V's
Seaford (28)
League
Seaford opened their league season
with the tough task of a trip to Crawley to
face last years 3rd place finishers. With Seaford finishing in the
final place in Sussex one to
avoid demotion the omens did not look good, especially with Crawley confident of
regaining their place in the upper leagues after a season in Sussex
one.
Seaford however, with a new
Skipper in Jason Pheasant and a new coach in Rob Impey, have put in a lot of
effort in over the summer and with a couple of new players and the return of
some long term injuries, Seaford are becoming a team to be reckoned
with.
Crawley took the first points of
the game with a penalty kick to take a 3 point lead against the run of play but
this simply stirred Seaford into action as they
attacked with power and pace.
Andy Nathan scored the first try
rounding off a move involving both forwards and backs to cross the line
unopposed with Seaford having committed all the
host's players to defence and leaving Nathan on the overlap. Ben Cox converted
and Seaford led
7-3.
With the line out working well
Seaford then took the direct approach and from quick ball released Danny Newby
and Stuart Webb to beat the last line of defence with Webb adding the points.
Cox again added the extras for Seaford to lead
14-3.
A stunned Crawley proved their own
ambitions with a well worked try and a penalty in reply but just before the
break direct play once again saw Seaford cross the line, this time with Paul
Burns making a fantastic angled run to cross in the corner and score under the
posts. Cox was reliable with the boot and Seaford turned around 21-13
up.
From the restart Crawley changed
tactics and using their massive forwards starved Seaford of possession for much of the game. Seaford's defence proved to be on par with their attacking
but they did concede two penalties to see them claw back to 21-19.
With 5 minutes to go with the
hosts having just missed a penalty to take the lead, Danny Kristiansen broke
from the back of the scrum on the blind side and after a quickly recycled ball,
released substitute hooker Jason Morgan down the
line.
Crawley underestimated the speed
and power of Morgan as he lost his chasers, beat a covering tackle and then
carried the full back over the line for one of his trade mark tries, started
from well inside his own half. Cox converted from the touchline and Seaford finished with a fine 28-19
victory.

Seaford (49) Vs Hellingly (5)
League
In the penultimate league game of the season
Seaford hosted Hellingly and looked to have
saved the best performance of the season until the end.
Bolstered by the return of Ben Cox and the
Burns twins, Paul and Chris, Seaford looked a
different side as confidence flowed throughout the team.
Having beaten Seaford 13-7 at their own ground earlier in the season
Hellingly were also aiming for victory and the first half was a pretty even
affair. Andy Booth scored the try of the game with a break from well inside his
own half he then went on to beat both the covering winger and full back for a
well earned 5 points. Ben Cox could not add the extras but slotted a penalty
soon afterwards to increase the score to 8 nil.
With the game still evenly matched Hellingly
made a superb break and pulled the score back to 8-5 with ten minutes of the
first half remaining but Cox extended the lead to 11-5 on the stroke of half
time with another penalty.
In the second half as Hellingly tired Seaford
turned on some class and despite the wind and rain ran in 6 unanswered tries to
take a convincing 49 - 5 victory.
The tries came from Danny Newby (2), Jason
Pheasant, Matt Evans, Stuart Webb and Richard Foster and although all are
forwards, most were made by breaks from the backs and finished off by forwards
in a great display of 15 man attacking rugby.
The result leaves Seaford in 7th place in the table with final
opponents, Pulborough, in sixth place and one point behind. The game on the
8th April therefore becomes a 7th and 8th place
play off with both sides eager to finish above the other but if Seaford can
maintain this form the Pulborough slope should prove no problem for Seaford.

Seaford (40) Vs Eastbourne II (10)
Seaford could only raise one side this week so
a mixed Seaford team faced a visiting Eastbourne second team with a few
Seaford players to make up the
numbers.
The game was played in good spirits with
Seaford opening up a big lead before the
visitors struck with a well worked try through the
midfield.
The highlight of the day, raising a massive
cheer from both teams and the spectators, occurred midway through the second
half as Eastbourne created an overlap and
released their winger for a great try in the corner. The winger was none other
than Seaford 2nd team stalwart Phil
Austin, scoring his first ever try in three years of
playing.
Next Saturday Sees both sides at home in League
action. The firsts have a must win game against Hellingly and need to win either
this game or the next away against Pulborough to avoid relegation. The Seconds
face 7th placed East Grinstead III and a win in this match
will lift them out of the relegation zone.

Heathfield (22) VsSeaford (12)
League
With Injuries and illness hitting
Seaford hard they could only play one match
this weekend, having to cancel the second team league fixture against Haywards
Heath, and travelling to Heathfield for a first team league match.
After recent disappointments
Skipper Matt Garman had a much changed side for a very difficult
fixture.
Heathfield looked dangerous
straight from the start and on 4 minutes crossed for a try after a good attack
from their forwards before releasing their backs for an unconverted try.
5-0.
Seaford began to get into the game and a great rolling
maul from the pack saw James Anderson equalise with the touchdown. With no
recognised kicker in the team, hooker Jason Morgan attempted, but missed the
conversion. 5-5. Seaford then had the chance to
go ahead when Heathfield were penalised as they tried to defend but the penalty
attempt was missed.
For much of the rest of the half
the play was even with both sides creating chances and showing good defence.
Just before the break Heathfield were awarded a penalty and caught Seaford napping with a quick take. They crossed the line
between the posts and with the simple conversion led 12-5 at the half time
whistle.
Heath extended their lead with a
five point try straight from the restart after a good phase of play from the
home side backs and it looked as though Seaford
would once again collapse with the pressure.
Showing Great Spirit though
Seaford stuck to the game plan and another good
phase of play saw another rolling maul with Matt Evens claiming the try. Morgan
converted and Seaford were just five points
behind with ten minutes to go. 17-12.
It was not to be Seaford's day
however as in the final minute, with Seaford
throwing everything into attack to try and gain the victory, Heathfield broke
away for the final try and took the league points with a 22-12
victory.
Seaford, although disappointed with the result can
take heart from their performance in this game and look to future weeks with
more confidence.

Seaford (0)
Vs Crowborough (53) League
Seaford entertained title chasing Crowborough on
Saturday and the visitors deserved 53 - 0 victory sent them to the top of the
table.
Crowborough raced to a 12 - 0 lead
in the opening 5 minutes with two tries. They followed this with a penalty and
another try to lead by 20 points before Seaford
even started playing. For the final minutes of the half Seaford attacked the
visitors line and Matt Garman was unlucky to be held up over the line before a
breakaway by Crowborough saw them race the length of the pitch to increase their
lead to 27 before the half time whistle.
The visitors scored a well worked
try straight after the break and then Danny Newby was harshly sin binned for a
high tackle. Seaford's 14 men hung on for the 10 minutes he was off but on his
return Seaford appeared to collapse from the effort and the visitors added
another two tries in quick succession.
Newby was then unlucky to receive
his 2nd yellow card and missed the final few minutes of the match.
The referee had warned both sides for high tackling and felt he had no option
other than to send him off. Newby can feel mighty unlucky to receive either card
but the second, especially was particularly harsh with even the opposition
confused by the decision.
The visitors ended the game with
another try to take their tally to 53.

Seaford
(19) V's Burgess Hill (33) League
Seaford entertained Burgess Hill on Saturday and with
a disappointing performance threw away the league points with a 19 - 33 loss.
With skipper Matt Garman and the influential Stuart Webb and James Anderson all
missing due to injuries and work commitments the much changed pack found itself
on the back foot for the first time this season.
Good pressure from the visitors
produced two early tries, both converted for a 14 point lead before Seaford finally started putting some rugby together. With
ten minutes of the half remaining Seaford drove a maul over the line for Matt
Evans to score a try and leave the half time score at 5
-14.
Straight from the restart another
Seaford error produced another 7 points for the
visitors. Seaford then got their driving game
into gear and crossed the line only for the referee to be unsighted. Seaford kept up the pressure and eventually Pete Joy
crossed under the posts. Andy Booth converted.
12-21.
Seaford then gifted Hill another try to cancel out the
score. 12-28. With 15 minutes to go Seaford
finally started to get into the game and when Danny Newby Broke the line a
comeback looked on the cards. Simon Baker converted
19-28.
As Seaford threw everything into attack the visitors showed
some excellent defence and with five minutes to go Hill broke away for the
winning score. 19-33.
A disappointing result which now
leaves Seaford in danger of relegation.
Seaford's 2nd team did not play this
week as they had too many players unavailable.

Crawley (30) V's Seaford (14) League
Seaford travelled to Crawley on Saturday for a tough league fixture and
although the visitors played well, their own mistakes cost them the 2 vital
league points.
Skipper, Matt Garman, elected to
play into the strong wind in the first half and the big Crawley pack together
with some effective kicking kept Seaford pinned
in their own half for much of the
time. Two penalties and two tries saw the hosts to an 18 point lead by the break
but Seaford were confident that they could
still come back into the game.
With the wind now behind them
Seaford upped the pace and Matt Garman was clinging to the ball as Seaford rolled over the line with a great maul. Seaford kept up the pressure and within minutes a quickly
taken line out from Danny Newby released Garman again for his second of the day.
With Ben Cox converting both Seaford were now just 4 points down but the ease
with which these points were scored seamed to lull Seaford into a sense that the game was in the bag.
As mistakes crept in Crawley capitalised and a breakaway try extended their
lead to 25-14 and then their pack came back into the game and a series of
forward attacks finally resulted in the final points of the game as their prop
crashed over for a try and a final score of 30-14.

Seaford (19) V's Uckfield (27) (32?) League
For the second time in two weeks Seaford faced Uckfield and after last weeks
disappointing 37-3 loss were determined to put on a better showing in the home
league fixture.
Straight from the kick off Seaford used their pack to trundle the ball up the
park and only some stout defence kept the home side out. Seaford battered the
line for ten minutes and were eventually successful with the pack driving over
the line with scrum half Matt Evans coming up with the ball, for a good try
against his old club. Simon Baker converted for Seaford to lead 7 nil.
Seaford kept up the attack but were rocked when a mistake well into
Uckfield territory resulted in quick ball to their winger who raced over
virtually the length of the pitch to score under the posts and allow the
visitors to equalise. Seaford kept to their game plan of keeping the ball tight
and Baker was unlucky with a penalty awarded for Uckfield pulling down a rolling
maul. James Anderson missed an attempted drop goal before Danny Newby finally
managed to cross the line with a powerful run to see Seaford close the half 12-7
up.
From the restart Seaford were still in control up front and on ten minutes
were again unlucky as another break away try saw the visitors take the lead with
another converted try. 12-19. With their heads up the visitors made a rare visit
to the Seaford half and were rewarded with a penalty to increase the lead to
12-22.
Seaford came straight back and were awarded a penalty try after a well worked
and virtually unstoppable rolling maul was pulled down just short of the line.
Baker had no problems with the conversion and Seaford were just three points
down at 19-22. With ten minutes to go and just three points in it Uckfield came
into the game put some phases together, their forwards finally started to get on
top of the tiring Seaford pack. They crossed the line but the referee was unable
to see if the ball was grounded an so was unable to award the points. They kept
up the pressure and eventually crossed for what proved to be the final score of
the match and take a 27-19 victory.
Somehow the referee made the final score 32-19 but both sides agreed on
the final score as only an 8 point difference. Seaford can be pleased with a
much improved performance on last week with the backs tackling well and coming
up fast to frustrate the opposition and force errors. With Ben Cox and Nick
Everson due back from injuries in the next couple of weeks Seaford can look to
the run in of the league with confidence.

Uckfield (37) Vs Seaford (3) Semi-Final
Sussex
Shield
Seaford crashed out of the Sussex
Shield on Saturday with a one sided score line in a game that was certainly
tighter than the score suggests.
Straight from the start
Seaford attacked the Uckfield line and were rewarded with
a penalty ten minutes in. Simon Baker converted and
Seaford led 3-0.
Seaford
kept up the pressure but could not convert this to points. A handling error on
the half hour gifted Uckfield a 7 point try on 15 minutes as their center hacked
through a loose ball and collected it for an easy score but Seaford were still
dominating play. Just before the break Uckfield increased the score line with
another try against the run of play to lead by 12-3.
Uckfield were first on the score sheet in the second half
with a penalty but
Seaford were still in the
game. Another break away try increased the lead to 20-3 and with 15 minutes to
go Seaford needed to score next to stand a chance. Unfortunately the Uckfield
backs then picked up their game and two well worked tries finished the game as a
contest. A final try for the hosts on the final whistle sealed the game with a
37-3 scoreline.
Next Saturday
Seaford play
Uckfield again, this time in the league and with home advantage. Kick off
2.15PM. The Seconds are also in league action, away to high flying
Plumpton.

Hastings (54) Vs Seaford (0) League
On Saturday
Seaford
visited league leaders Hastings for the first game of the New Year and were
shown exactly why the hosts are top of the division and favorites for promoting
this season.
In the first twenty minutes
Hastings forwards established a platform and their back
division, easily capable of playing two divisions higher, took
Seaford apart. 4 tries and a 22 point lead and it looked
as though
Seaford could concede a hundred
points in the match. They dug in however and started to apply some pressure and
were unfortunate not to score when Simon Baker went over put could not ground
the ball.
Seaford held Hasting at bay until the break and started the
second half well but when a good attacking move broke down
Hastings
pounced on the
ball and with quick and accurate hands converted the possession to a try and a
27 point lead.
Seaford kept up the pressure but before the end
Hastings
added another 5
tries to take the game 54 nil. The fact that Hastings only kicked two of their
ten conversions was not due to bad kicking but the fact that virtually all kicks
were taken right from the side lines as the tries came wide out after Seaford
had been stretched wide one way and then wide the other at an amazing
pace.
Dave Williams had a good debut for Seaford and Henry Smith
and Simon Baker both played extremely well with some excellent tackling but
Seaford need competition for places if they are
to stay in this league.

Hellingly (13) Vs Seaford (7) League
After last Saturday's disappointing draw
Seaford needed a good team performance to get their season
back on track. They got the team performance but Hellingly had other ideas about
the result and duly took the points in a difficult game.
On a quagmire of a pitch handling was always going to be
difficult but
Seaford put together some good
play to attack the home side early on. On 15 minutes Seaford were attacking but
a dropped ball saw Hellingly hack the ball through and then with Seaford still
going forward collect and run the 60 meters for the first score of the
game.
5 points down,
Seaford
kept up the pressure but could not break the Hellingly defence and the half
ended at 5-0. Hellingly then had their best phase of the match and some good
work eventually released their back division to score in the corner. With the
conversion missed
Seaford were now 10 points
down and started to up the effort.
Simon Baker missed a penalty kick due to the underfoot
conditions before Danny Newby crossed the line for a try. Baker made no mistake
with the conversion and
Seaford were now back
at 10-7. With the minute ticking down Seaford battered the Hellingly line and as
the home side desperately hung on
Seaford were
penalized for clearing at the ruck 2 meters out. The resultant penalty relieved
the pressure and then
Seaford conceded a
penalty in the final minute to See Hellingly take the victory
13-7.
Seaford seconds were again without a game as Heathfield
cried off late on Friday evening,
not leaving
Seaford time to find a replacement
match.
Next Saturday
Seaford
firsts play Plumpton in the quarter final of the Sussex Shield, kick off at 1.45
at the Salts. The Seconds are also at home in a league match against Uckfield
II's, kick off 2.15.
On Sunday Hellingly U14/15's visited Seaford, with
Seaford lending the opposition a few players a
hard fought match ensued. Credit must go to all the
Seaford players who played
for the opposition and a special mention to Shaun Fortes and Lee Baker who both
had magnificent games.

Seaford (0) V's Pulborough (0)
League
With Seaford having not played for three weeks due to a
succession of last minute cancellations rustiness was always going to be a
problem as
Seaford resumed league action this
Saturday.
The weather also conspired against flowing rugby with 40
mile an hour wind and heavy rain throughout the match. Pulborough kicked off
with the wind behind them and
Seaford defended
well for the opening 20 minutes to keep them from scoring.
Seaford dominated the scrums and won plenty of ball
against the head but could not turn the dominance into a score. The half ended
at 0 - 0 with
Seaford confident that with the
wind behind them they could get the points.
The second half however turned out to be scoreless with
Pulborough showing excellent defense to keep Seaford from scoring.
Seaford
did cross the line on one occasion but the referee was unsighted and unable to
award the points. This left both
Seaford and
Pulborough in the very unusual position of a nil- nil draw. A score more usual
in the other code of football and the league points shared.
The seconds had their league game at Ditchling canceled on
Saturday morning due to water logged pitch and so did not
play.

Seaford (10) V's
Hastings
(63)
League
With injuries already badly affecting selection for both
senior sides
Seaford could not have had a worse
week to host league leaders Hastings and Bexhill. Captain, Matt Garman's
problems were compounded with 3 first choice backs unavailable through either
work or holiday commitments, leaving Seaford with a very different side to that
which knocked league leaders Crawley off the top a couple of weeks
ago.
Hastings soon found and
capitalized on Seaford's weakness scoring 4
tries all from 1st phase ball within the opening twenty five minutes.
With a deficit of 26 points Seaford's pack started to get on top of and dominate
the
Hastings
forwards and limited the backs possession. Peter Joy scored a consolation try on
30 minutes from a quickly taken tap penalty to see the score at half time 5
-26.
Seaford kept up the pressure and it took 22 minutes for
Hastings to
score again as they rolled on their fresh legs, a luxury Matt Garman has not
got. A mark of the pressure Seaford were applying came on the 26th
minute as Hastings, although leading by 28 points elected to kick a penalty to
further increase the lead.
Another try from the
Hastings back division on 30 minutes spurred
Seaford into a good attacking phase and from a five meter
scrum the pack rumbled the ball over the line with Matt Evans grounding the ball
for the score.
The last five minutes saw Seaford fall apart and concede
another three tries as home legs simply ran out of pace and Hastings took a 10 -
63 victory.

Seaford (22) V's St Francis (5)
Friendly
With the draw for the Sussex Shield taking place in early
September, Midhurst left it until Thursday evening to let Seaford know that they
would not be playing and
Seaford would receive
a bye to the next round. This left
Seaford
without a game until St Francis stepped into the breach.
The
Crawley based side has
Sussex One ambitions and so the game was a good test for them and they played
with spirit throughout.
Seaford however played
stop start rugby and for periods were devastating but for much of the game and
especially the second half were decidedly lackluster.
Seaford were the only scorers in
the first half with Pete Joy crossing for the first after some good driving play
by the forwards. Jason Morgan added the next two, both after flowing moves by
the backs and scored in the corner. The forth and as it would turn out last try
for
Seaford came just before the break when
Nimmo rounded off another good backs move. Simon baker converted and
Seaford took a 22 point cushion into the second
half.
In the second period St. Francis stepped up the pressure
and
Seaford's game plan fell apart as they
became too loose with errors throughout their game. The Hosts scored a well
deserved try with ten minutes remaining to see the final score at 5 -
22.
The seconds were without a game again this week as
Crowborough withdrew midweek and left them without opposition.
The game did however mark the debut of Danny Kristiansen at
scrum half who had a great game and was joined by his father Karl as a late
substitution.
Next Saturday both sides are at home in league action with
the 1sts playing league favorites
Hastings
and the seconds entertaining high
flying Plumpton. Both kick offs are at 2.30pm.
