Salcombe under12s finally got their season under way with a resounding victory over a Totnes side weakened by unavailability. From the first whistle the red and whites showed how they were going to play by passing the ball wide to wings Josh Hill and Cameron Day and recycling quickly with fly half Angus Johnstone going over for the first try. The forwards created a strong platform from the scrum with front row Myles Fowler, Jack Sanderson and Ryan Harris never taking a backward step and 2nd rows Megan Foster and Louis Gautier with strong ball carrying this allowed the backs plenty of space and the passing was crisp and well timed even in the testing wet conditions. Kieron Clarke touched down for the second try from a well worked move with Adam Vooght and Harry Preston. Fowler then showed that the practice on the training field does work with 2 tries from short second phase ball.
G.Trimmer and Jamie Hurrell came on for the second half with Trimmer soon going over for a try from an excellent delayed pass from Johnstone. Hurrell worked hard in the loose and had some strong runs. Trimmer added the 6th with the hard working Gautier going over to round the scoring off. This was a confident start to the season with the players gelling well as a team. Conversions were by - Johnstone 3, Woods - 2 and Day - 2.

Stourbridge also had a resounding win over Totnes and this was always going to be a close affair.
The visitors started strongly with their pack rucking well and strong running from the backs with the fly half dictating play. Salcombe defended well with big tackles from Vooght and Preston and both teams were sizing each other up with Stourbridge edging the early exchanges. This proved to be the case with the ball being passed out wide for the visitors winger to go over for the first try which was converted. Salcombe got back into the game and the forwards started to win ball with Gautier going over and Johnstone converting to level the scores. Salcombe were in the ascendancy and with half time imminent G Trimmer scored following great work from the forwards, Woods converted.
The second half started with Stourbridge chasing the game and playing some mature rugby, however it was Salcombe next on the score sheet with scrum half Toby Woods collecting the ball from a ruck and creating a gap to touch down, Day converting. The match continued with both sides playing great rugby, near the final whistle Woods battled over to score the last try converted by Trimmer.
This is the second time Stourbridge have visited Salcombe and both clubs enjoy this fixture and hope to continue in forthcoming seasons.
Stourbridge nominated Myles Fowler as their player of the match with Salcombe nominating Fly half Owen as their player of the match, shields were exchanged.

With Totnes U11s travelling light of players it was agreed to play 9-a-side with no converting. Salcombe started strongly with Oram tackling the Totnes player into touch and taking the ball from the line-out he ran from the half-way line to score.
From the restart Totnes took the ball forward but strong drives from the Crabs Favis and Trimmer slowed play. From a Totnes scrum the ball went out to the winger who was tackled into touch by Roberts for the line-out. Salcombe retained possession with Trimmer and Oram driving forward. Roberts took the ball out and passed to Shortman who made some distance before Trimmer linked and went on to score.
Tots continued to play with determination and replied with a try from their scrum close to the line when the ball was passed to the fly-half for a clear run in. The next try went to Salcombe as the forwards good teamwork kept the ball alive and eventually Trimmer was able to break for a dash to the line.
Shortly into the second half a Salcombe scrum saw the ball go out to Roberts who first passed to Makepeace and then linked up again to take the ball at pace for a good run before passing out to Shortman who this time managed to sidestep the defence for a run down the touchline to score.
After making good progress from the restart Totnes were awarded a penalty a metre from the tryline and scored when their prop took a crash ball over. However Salcombe were to add further points when tackles by Wilkins, Smith and Oram foiled Totnes attempts to run the ball wide with Oram picking up a loose ball and racing for the tryline and adding another shortly after from a stolen maul ending the game at 6 tries to 2 in Salcombe's favour

The first home game of the season played at Salcombe’s newly acquired ground brought a second win for the under eights who kicked off in fighting spirit in a well contested match. The side combined well to put Totnes under pressure with two early tries coming from Haydn Lidstone to give them the lead. Totnes responded with two tries but Salcombe stretched the gap with a further try from Haydn Lidstone and one for Charlie Preston. At half time it was four apiece. Minutes into the second half Totnes found a chink in the Salcombe defence to add one to their tally but good positioning by Haydn Lidstone allowed Salcombe to come level again. Totnes again found gaps in the home side’s defence to gain the advantage. Trailing 6-5 Salcombe knew they had to up their presence. Using the width of the pitch Haydn Lidstone mapped out his route to the line to bring the sides even at 6 all. A carbon copy followed moments later for Lidstone thanks to an intelligent pass from Tom McQuitty running up the wing. Salcombe confirmed their intentions with a last minute dash to the line by Haydn Lidstone. A try saving tag by Thomas Broadgate denied Totnes from a late consolation.

The second match opened with a touch down for Totnes followed by a period of constant Salcombe pressure resulting in a well-earned try for Henry Phillips. The ball was again closely contested with near tries at both ends of the pitch. Totnes took the lead again to go one try ahead but Salcombe were quick to respond, Max Clacey making a clean pass to Tom McQuitty who put in a real attacking run through the defence to bring the sides level. Totnes again fought back to take the lead. It was cat and mouse rugby with Charlie Preston scampering over the line to bring Salcombe level. Totnes dug in hard and earned a further two tries from some well thought out interplay. Just before the half time whistle, Henry Phillips made a great run to the line for Salcombe leaving them with a one try deficit. At the restart, Salcombe trailed 4-5 but showed great courage under fire with Thomas Broadgate making a quick pass to Haydn Lidstone who secured the try. Seb Tooke sneaked through a gap to touch down Salcombe’s sixth and take them into the lead. The leveller came just moments after but was short-lived thanks to a further try from Lidstone. Josh Woolard made some excellent runs through the field and found Lidstone out on the wing for try number eight. The whole side again combined well with excellent support play resulting in a final try for Lidstone to make it 9-7 and complete a very wet but enjoyable morning’s rugby.

Salcombe entered the field with much enthusiasm; however Totnes exploited a gap in Salcombe's defence in order to score the first point. Despite some good running and passing by Luke Wotton, Ben Tregelles and Adam Squire the Totnes defence stopped them short of the line and went on to score their second point.
From then on Salcombe played good rugby and scored 3 well earned tries, the team proved that they can work together and are improving game by game. Special mention needs to be given to Kieran Carr and Daniel Broadgate for their determination throughout the game and their support to their fellow team mates.
Morgan Chope, Robert Tobin and Alex Baker all played very well in their first match and were an asset to their team.
Salcombe U7s 8 Totnes U7s 4
The under 7’s went on to play a second match with Oscar Day wasting no time in scoring the first try, his determination and strong running proved him difficult to stop as he scored three further tries. The score was momentarily levelled by Totnes but Salcombe saw an opportunity to attack and this was taken by Elliot Vooght scoring 3 tries and George Yeoman helping himself to a further 2. Great support was given by Sophie Inch who helped set up many of the tries. Totnes kept on going but Salcombe proved the stronger side.
