Peter Scarsbrook Debut
April 1979 - Peter in a dream opener ...
PLA 27 pts
UPPER CLAPTON 4 pts
Young number eight Peter Scarsbrook made a dream debut for PLA first XV when he scored three tries in their victory over powerful Upper Clapton at The Drive last Saturday.
Upper Clapton snatched an early lead with a try but, Port levelled the score five minutes later when their threes swept up field with a bout of line passing and flanker Tony Holland was on hand to conplete the movement and run over.
Port continued to dominate the exchanges and just before the interval their forwards pushed a scrum back ten yards and Scarbrook touched down his first score when the line was crossed.
Early in the second half outside half John Yareham shot a drop goal between the posts as the opposition threes menacingly bore down on him.
Scarbrook got his second try when he jumped and caught cleanly and burst through from a line-out. Yareham converted.
A further try came when centre Tony Owers chipped into a gap in the Clapton defence and fellow centre Norman Brown raced on to the ball to score between the posts.
Yarehame again kicked the extra points.
Finally, Scarbrook went over for his hat-trick with a push-over try. Again he controlled the ball splendidly with his feet to the back of the scrum.
So Port took revenge for a narrow defeat by Upper Clapton last season. But equally important the match was contested in a commendable spirit after so many games between the sides in the past had been marred by displays of bad temper.

Albert Rowley Debut
THE PORT GIVE ALBERT, 43, HIS FIRST XV DEBUT
STREATHAM & CROYDON 7 pts
PLA 35 pts
PLA made it a debut to remember for 43 year old Albert Rowley on Saturday.
For Port ran up this 28 points victory at the expense of a side who had lost only once in 16 matches and conceded only 36 points in the process.
But for getting a bad pass with the line at his mercy, Rowley could have been among the scorers during the early stages.
Tries scorers for Port were Doug Chester (2), Gary Bishop (2), Billy Ambrose, Terry Braithwaite and John Wyatt. Wyatt also kicked a drop goal and two conversions.

Braham Brothers Debut
Bright Debuts From the Port's Braham Brothers
BILLERICAY 4 pts
PLA 16 pts
PORT brought two coloured bothers Joe and John Braham into the team to replace number either Gary Bishop and centre Doug Chester, both injured the previous weekend.
Both played well enough, especially Joe who went close to scoring from breaks from the base of the scrum on more than one occasion as Port avenged a beating Billericay had inflicted on their Ravens the previous Saturday.
PLA won by two penalties, one try and one converted penalty to a try.
Inside the first minute with full back Laurie Hague, who had been held up in heavy traffic not yet on the field, scrum-half John Wyatt kicked Port into a three point lead with a penalty.
After 20 minutes outside-half John Yareham broke to split Billericay's defence and the ball travelled smoothly along the three line for right wing Joe Potter to cross. Yareham then kicked a long-range penalty.
Billericay's pressure on the Port line was rewarded by a try just before half-time.
A long drawn-out battle between the packs for supremacy developed in the second half. Towards the end Yareham broke clean through only to be brought down with a desperate deliberate trip. The referee gave a penalty try which Wyatt converted.
Although the result stretched Port's winning sequence to five, this was their worse performance to date and they will have to sharpen up and tighten up if they are to beat Woodford and United Services Chatham in the coming weeks.
PLA: L. Hague, J. Potter, D. Platt, T. Owers, John Braham, J. Yareham, J. Wyatt, D. Bumpstead, L. Nicholas, L. Tarvin, B. Ambrose, B. Cadby, D. Chaffey, Joe Braham, D. Lodamore

Tim Herrings Debut
September 15, 1983 - Herring's debut cut short but Port are good enough
PLA 12 pts
THURROCK XV 4 pts
PLA opened their programme with an encouraging win over a Thurrock XV despite losing the services of Tim Herring from the pack during the second half.
Herring on his debut had given a bustling 100 per cent performance before being forced to retire and was replaced in the forwards by John Green, normally a scrum half.
Barry Gittos, continuing at scrum half in the absence of John Wyatt gave the backs an excellent supply of ball, and there was excellent second phase support from the forwards.
PLA had a major share of the ball in the first half and while the backs began many good passing movements, they often tended to progress without support and with no-one prepared to run at the opposition.
This changed in the final ten minutes of the half when first centre Tony Owers and then outside half Malcolm Richardson broke through Thurrock's defence for well-taken tries.
Richardson converted both for a 12-0 half-time lead.
Although Port had the wind in their favour during the second half and number eight Del Platt and fullback Shane Antony both embarked upon threatening breaks, they lost their overall dominance.
Thurrock, however, were limited to a single unconverted try late in the game when Port were virtually certain of their victory.
PLA: S. Antony, J. Braham, D. Chester, T. Owers, P. Brown, M. Richardson, B. Gittos, J. Tierney, T. Rhys, L. Nicholas, T. Herring, C. Ribbons, P. Thackerall, D. Platt, M. Fincham
