North Kesteven U 12/13's 17pts - LSST Priory 12pts A cold but clear and sunny Saturday morning saw more history being created
at North Kesteven Rugby club with the first ever outing for their Under 12/13
team. The team which has been training under coaches Daz Woodall and Bruce
Woodruff for only six weeks were keen to put on a good show for the many
supporters who turned up to support both teams.
Understandable
inexperience and nerves were shown by the NK side in the early stages of the
game. Numerous handling errors meant that they were unable to work their way out
of their own 22 metre area. It therefore came as no surprise to see LSST take
the lead with a try by their winger in the left hand corner. With the conversion
kick missed LSST took an early five point lead.
Gradually North Kesteven
came into the game and as they did so their confidence grew. Just before half
time NK levelled the scores after a period of sustained pressure close to the
LSST line. Jack Stafford crossed the line from short range. With the conversion
missed the scores were level 5 points all at half time.
The second half
started like a dream for NK who won quick turn over ball in their own 22m area.
The ball was passed quickly to centre Jake Turton who showed his pace and
outflanked the opposition defence to score a try by running fully 70 metres to
put the ball down in the left hand corner. With the conversion missed NK took
the lead 10 - 5.
Both teams were now playing flat out for the victory and
the game flowed from end to end. Fortunately for NK they were the next scorers.
They stole a lineout ball deep in the LSST 22 metres area and from a series of
rucks and mauls they moved ever closer to the opposition's try line. This
allowed prop Karl Andrews to bundle over from short range. With the conversion
kick made good by Gary Clubb NK took at 12 point lead into the final stages of
the match. The try and conversion proved to be crucial as LSST came back
strongly at their hosts, spending the last 10 minutes of the match camped in and
around the NK 22 metre area. The pressure had to tell and eventually the NK line
was crossed. The conversion was good to bring the score back to 17 - 12. The
match ended shortly afterwards much to the relief of the NK team who had done
just enough to win a tight encounter.
Next Sunday 21st November, the
Under 12/13 squad as well as the Under 17's travel to local rivals Skegness.
Both matches promise to be tight affairs. The bus departs from the NK club car
park at 9am.
