An Impressive Season's Opener
North Kesteven R.U.F.C. Under 17 Girl's side made the short trip to Ruskington Road to play Sleaford Under 17's on a warm and sunny Sunday afternoon for their first game of the 2006/2007 season.
This was the hosts first game of contact rugby so NK agreed to play to the R.F.U.W. Under 14 Law Variations ; 12 players per team with 5 players in the uncontested scrum, 4 players in the lineout with no assisted jumps.
From the first few minutes of the game it was evident that the experience of the NK players was going to prove too much for the Sleaford girls. The NK " offload before or at contact game " ensured a fast moving game with a North Kesteven player seemingly always in a position to support the ball carrier to continue the attacking movement.
Tries from Lizzie Kirk, Jess Milner, Gez Baker( 2 ) and Mica Grossett ( 4 ) plus 4 drop goal conversions.
from Lizzie Cannon gave the visitors a 48 points to nil lead going into half time.
With the match being so one sided the respective coaches agreed to call the match over at half time. North Kesteven sportingly agreed to loan four of their most experienced players to Sleaford for the second half which then took the form of a training game.
The result was a much more even second half. The Sleaford side aided by the experience of loanee's Leanne Coulbeck, Lizzie Cannon, Mica Grossett and Laura Calvert scored two good tries which brought warm applause from the touchline.
The " NK Player Of The Day " was awarded to Gez Baker.
All in all a good run out for the NK girls who while pleased with their first half performance know that there will be a much stiffer test next week away at Melbourne in Derbyshire.
