Guinness Premiership sides confirmed for Middlesex Sevens
London Irish have confirmed that they will be defending their Middlesex Sevens title in August 2010. London Irish won the title in 2009 for the first time in their club’s history and made a Twickenham record by fielding the three Armitage brothers on the hallowed turf.
Their aspirations to retain the title will be hotly challenged by other Guinness Premiership clubs including Harlequins, London Wasps, Saracens, Newcastle Falcons, Leeds Carnegie and Leicester Tigers who will all be hoping to take home some of the £30,000 prize money on offer this year.
David Strettle, who captained the winning Harlequins side in 2008 and is now moving to Saracens commented “The Middlesex Sevens is a lot of fun for players and supporters alike, and a great way to start the season before 15s.”
The Guinness Premiership teams will be joined by England who will be appearing under their ‘Help for Heroes’ banner and by Scotland and Wales in advance of their Commonwealth Games challenges in October.
The British Army will again be fielding a strong side in the Middlesex Sevens and further invitation sides will be announced shortly.
Thousands of tickets have already been sold for the event which is a great family day out at Twickenham, as one fan commented, “It’s how all sport should be - competitive but great banter between rival fans. I’ll make the 450 mile round trip anytime!” Many fans dress up for the occasion and you can find yourself sitting next to Cavemen, SuperHeroes, Fish Fingers, Bananas, Smurfs, or even Lilly Allens.
