London Welsh Rugby Football Club
Celebrating its 125th Anniversary Season in 2010/2011 London Welsh Rugby Football Club was established by and for London's Welsh community and has played senior-level rugby in England since its formation in 1885. Over the years the club has contributed 177 players to the Wales national team and 43 players to the British and Irish Lions. Seven London Welsh players were selected for the 1971 tour to New Zealand (a Lions record in amateur times). John Taylor one of the seven London Welsh players selected in 1971 is the clubs current Managing Director. The 1st XV squad are fully professional, and hopes are high that this will lead to a sustained challenge for promotion to the English Rugby Premiership. Despite professionalism, London Welsh has retained the atmosphere of an amateur and community club. Although the 1stXV squad are fully professional, the Wizards, Occies, Youth and Mini rugby are still strong parts of the club. London Welsh also has one of the longest established women's sides who celebrated twenty years of women's rugby at the club in the 2005/6 season.
Welsh Guards Afghanistan Appeal
The next ten years will make extraordinary demands on serving Welsh Guardsmen, their partners and families and particularly those members of the Regiment who have left through disability or work-related illness. The Welsh Guards Afghanistan Appeal is designed to support, alleviate and improve the prospects of all those consequently in need. The fund will enable the Regiment to provide:
· Support to the families and dependants of those killed in action by responding promptly to problems of bereavement and hardship.
· Support to those wounded on operations, particularly those who have had to leave the Army, to assist in finding them new employment and to help them become active family and community members.
· Support to the families and dependants of those seriously wounded or injured in prolonged recovery situations.
Welsh Guards
The Welsh Guards were raised on 26 February 1915 by order of King George V, in order to complete the national complement of regiments of Foot Guards identified with the countries of the United Kingdom. The wide range of recent activities undertaken by the Welsh Guards reflects the busy and varied nature of the modern day British Army. A Guardsman who has served with the Battalion since 2002 will have been on operations in every calendar year. Tours to Bosnia, Kosovo, Northern Ireland, Iraq and Afghanistan, interspersed with fire fighting, sport, adventurous training and State Ceremonial and Public Duties demonstrate the busy nature of this period. As a Foot Guards Regiment in the Household Division, the Welsh Guards are proud to provide the guard for Her Majesty the Queen at her royal residences.
Regimental Band of the Welsh Guards
The Band of the Welsh Guards is based at Wellington Barracks, London. It was formed in 1915 and has an establishment of 49 musicians. Links with the Regiment's traditional recruiting areas in Wales are maintained by regular public appearances there, often with many of the fine male voice choirs for which the Principality is renowned.
