The Academy was brought to my attention by Barry Thompson, who at the time was our Club's Chair of Playing I believe he had, with other club Presidents and RFU representatives, previously discussed the advantages of such a programme. Barry indicated that the Academy would be of particular value to some of the younger club/committee members and encouraged me to attend on behalf of Newark Rugby Club.
Due to my late inclusion in to the Academy, I unfortunately missed the launch event. However, I did attend the remaining challenge and support groups and central event at Broadstreet Rugby Club.
The programme was, from my perspective relevant, informative and most of all highlighted common issues/challenges facing clubs both within our region and further a field. In many ways it was a source of comfort that we face similar issues and moreover we now have a network where we can support each other and share information on relevant topics. The organisation of events was good and the provision of coaches/mentors was useful. Maybe more guidance for challenge and support groups could have benefited.
The major development areas were gaining a wider understanding of the support network available regionally and nationally, as well as understanding more fully the RFU's vision for community rugby - basically who we all fit together in to the broader RFU picture. For me, development will be about taking on a more detailed committee role within the club and knowing I have the support when I need it. I think it will also be important to maintain the network through the challenge and support groups - so we can keep some of the initial issues we discussed.
