A specially convened meeting of Lancashire’s Competitions Committee has decided that the delayed 2007 Lancashire Trophy Final, between Liverpool St Helens and Leigh, most recently advertised for Wednesday 2nd May at Tyldesley, will be contested after all - on the August Bank Holiday Monday, 27th August.
The game, the middle-tier cup competition in the County's knock-out programme and originally scheduled for Easter Monday, was subject to delay by both clubs’ successful season.
Liverpool St Helens ended on top of North West 2 and, on the non-league days, four rounds into the RFU Intermediate Cup and into both the Lancashire Cup and the Lancashire Trophy.
Leigh’s league campaign ended with the club in second place in Euromanx South Lancs/Cheshire 1 and in the final of the Trophy but with an end of season play-off. Winning through against Blackburn masked a mounting injury crisis, putting them at a loss as to who field for the Trophy final.
The Committee has decided that the game will be played at the start of the 2007/08 season.
It will be played the week before the season actually starts. With reference to the ‘structured season’: “Week 1” is the start of the league schedule, so the Lancashire Trophy final will be played in “Week 0”, on a date yet to be determined. Providing that the original hosts can accommodate Lancashire’s ruling, the match will be at Tyldesley. |
