Lancashire Girls Under 17s v Port Moody, Canada
Lancashire 15 Port Moody 60
Very fit, very fast and very well organised would be the best way to describe Port Moody's Girls' Rugby team!
The game started well for Lancashire after just a few minutes when Tyldesley scrum-half Danika Dowling made a break and off-loaded to Ormskirk prop Sarah Wallbank who scored the try. The conversion was missed, however, and Port Moody came straight back with a try of their own which they did convert. There followed some very good rugby from both sides. By half-time, Port Moody's strong scrummaging and solid back play had give them the the edge but Lancashire was very much still in the game.
The second half was a different story. Port Moody's superior pace and fitness became more and more evident and their support running was superb, allowing them to set up several more tries, many of which they converted. Lancashire heads stayed up, however, and they scored two more well-deserved tries - another for Sarah Wallbank and one for Tyldesley's Ava Joyce. Port Moody were the better side and thoroughly deserved this impressive win but the young Lancashire side - most of them under sixteen - took many positives from the game against the older opposition.
Particularly notable performances came from Waterloo's Sophie Pugh, Blackpool's Hannah Walsh and Tyldesley's Toni Wallbank and Blackpool's Ellie Fulton also did well on her Lancashire debut.
The game was followd by a lovely reception where presentations were made and where the players swopped e-mail addresses!
Our thanks go to the members of Bury Rugby Club for their excellent and friendly hospitality, to the referee, who did a superb job and, of course, to the players and coaches of Port Moody Secondary School who were a pleasure to host.
This was Lancashire Girls' last game of the season but, with changes to the RFUW age banding due to take effect at the start of next season, all the players will have the opportunity to trial for the new Lancashire U18 side in September, when an U15 girls' squad will also be set up.

About Port Moody and its School
Port Moody is situated in Western Canada, in British Columbia, inland from Vancouver on the delta of rivers and lakes that flow into the North Pacific. It is at the head of Burrard Inlet, surrounded by mountains and forested hillsides. A small town, it is home to about 25,000 people. The town offers unlimited opportunities for outdoor activities ranging from boating, swimming, hiking and cycling to breathtaking nature trails and wild life observation.
The Belcarra Regional Park on Burrard Inlet offers with picnicking and forest trails, and there are other locations offering dramatic shoreline and mountain activities, Noon's Creek Fish Hatchery is close to the Civic Recreation Centre and Sasamat Lake offers safe swimming, sandy beach and trails. Also there are the Station Museum and Arts Centre for history and culture, as well as many character neighbourhoods with their historic buildings, restaurants and stores. Loco, to the west of Port Moody on the north shore of Burrard Inlet, is the location of the Imperial Oil Refinery and the former historic Ioco town site.
The School
The original Port Moody High School, which was located on the grounds of the current Moody Junior, burned to the ground in 1969. A new site was chosen for the new Port Moody Senior Secondary School which opened in 1973.

A mythological bird which rose from the ashes, "The Phoenix", was appropriately chosen as the new school's mascot. The team name selected was the Port Moody Blues. Built to accommodate nine hundred students, Port Moody Secondary has grown to a population of well over fourteen hundred students and a staff of about one hundred.
A new era for the school began in September 1998, as the school became Port Moody Secondary School incorporating grades 9 through 12. The catchment area extends west to the Burnaby border, north to Anmore and Belcarra, south to Coquitlam, and east to the Coquitlam River.
Port Moody Secondary is respected for its academics; visual, performing and practical arts; and athletic programmes. A walk around our campus will attest to its attractive appearance and our Walls of Fame illustrate the numerous successes of our current students and our alumni. While an inclusive school, the school is well known for its International Baccalaureate, Advanced Placement, and Career Preparation Programmes. |
