18 Group Development Squad
Lancashire 6 Yorkshire 5
Lancashire made it three wins out of three with a last minute one point win against a battling Yorkshire side in wintry conditions at Tyldesley on Sunday 18th March.
A strong cross-wind forced both sides to change their plans of attack and it was Lancashire who did all the early running spending the first twenty minutes camped in or around the Yorkshire 22. Fly Half Jordan Davies (Eccles/Denstone College) darted twice for the line beating the first set of tacklers but a some good cover defence kept Lancashire out. Yorkshire finished the first half the stronger and where held up just over the line right on the half time whistle but both sides went in at half time having not bothered the scoreboard.
The second half was 10 minutes old when Yorkshire created an overlap on the right which resulted in their outside centre crossing the line for a try. The conversion attempt was hampered with the strong wind and the Yorkshire kicker was not happy with the movement of the ball on the tee. Eventually he decided to “hoof” the ball rather than gracefully slot the ball over the bar but his low-level power driver made straight for the bar. Both RFU appointed Touch Judges looked at each other and shook their heads both saying the ball had gone under he bar, Yorkshire protested it had just gone over Referee Andy Daniels backed up his TJs and didn’t signal the score.
Almost immediately Lancashire drove into the Yorkshire half with Jonathan France (Sedgley Park/Holy Cross College) and Kieran Brookes (Fylde/Kirkham GS) in taking the ball up at every opportunity. Yorkshire gave away a penalty on the 22 metre line which Davies slotted with ease and Lancashire now trailed by 2 points with 9 minutes left. It was now all Lancashire and replacement right-winger James Robinson (Tyldesley/Pendleton College) was tackled just inches short of the line after some good handling from the Lancashire back line.
Yorkshire won the lineout and managed to clear their lines to halfway where Lancashire again tried to take the game to Yorkshire up the middle of the park. With a minute remaining Yorkshire where again penalised and Davies incredibly called for the tee some 50 metres out with a strong cross wind. The crowd was hushed as Davies hit the sweetest of kicks that held firm until the last few metres, as the ball dipped it cleared the bar by inches and this time the Touch Judges’ flags were raised and Lancashire now led 6-5.
The last 30 seconds seemed like an hour and from a scrum Davies kicked the ball in to touch so that Lancashire could record a hard fought 6-5 victory.
Lancashire’s next match is on Wednesday 11th April against Cheshire.
