Under 16s aiming to finish season on a high against Scottish regions
It’s seven years on, and the anticipation of two cracking good encounters with our Scottish friends continues to wet the appetite. Lancashire regularly used to play Scotland at this level, but the blend of regional and county rugby offers more development to more players. Long may these games flourish!
Fri 13th: Lancs v Caledonia at Tyldesley (7.00)
Sun 15th: Lancs v Glasgow & District at Preston G/H (2.00)
Last year, 16 Group travelled to Scotland, losing initially to Glasgow 13-3 at Motherwell and then 10-5 to Caledonia in Stirling. Our Glasgow matches have rarely involved a wider margin, but have always been fiercely contested. The ‘Cale’ score-line hid what was one of the best games of the seven-year series, eclipsed only by a 24-24 draw all at Kirkcaldy in 2002.
This season, Glasgow have topped the Scottish Under 16s’ inter-district table, with Caledonia sitting in third place out of four. Glasgow opened with a strong first-half against the Border Reivers, winning 16-12, and followed this up with a 6-5 victory over Edinburgh and a final-match, 19-3 win over Caledonia. Cale’s sole result included a late penalty kick to take a 6-3 win against the Borders.
Sponsored by Butlers Farmhouse Cheeses, Lancashire’s 16 Group has enjoyed its most successful season since 2001/02.

This was a splendid team effort as the squad recorded a ‘grand-slam’ for the first time since that year, including a win in Yorkshire for the first time in 18 years.
Skipper, James Williams and vice captain, Daniel Hall both reached the England Under 16s ‘A’ Squad. Last time out, stand-in skipper Simon McIntyre masterminded a late 14-10 away victory, the boys’ first win against the same Leicestershire age group in three years - all three matches being settled by 5 points or less. The season’s success is a tribute to the 16 Group coaches, Andy Watt and Greg McMillan, joined latterly by Rachel Brown.
The Group's final matches, the traditional end-of-season games against the Caledonia (covering the Highlands and Islands) and the Glasgow & District region have been confirmed as follows:
