TROPHY Semi Final (for top team of 3 pools, plus highest placed runner-up)
Broughton Park 0 Ormskirk 7; Southport 10 Widnes 12
BOWL Semi Final (for the next highest ranked sides, 5th v 8th & 6th v 7th)
Aldwinians 14 Blackburn 0; Vale of Lune 12 Tarleton 7
After the two 'cherry & whites' drew 0-0 in the preliminary matches, Vale of Lune defeated Aldwinians 7-0 in the Bowl Final, but both sides had more than enough opportunities to take the game. Some exceptional defensive work prevented further scores at both ends.
In the Trophy Final, with previous fiesty encounters between the two in the memory bank, Ormskirk against Widnes was not going to a game for the feint-hearted - even at Under 12s. The outcome was a nail-biter, firmly refereed by Broughton Park's John Russell, one of a number of coaches (including Blackburn's Charles Page) who contributed much with their whistling skills!
The players gave their all, and a number will emerges in next season's 'Schools of Rugby' but with the scores level 7-7 at full-time (and extra-time not allowed in junior rugby), Widnes took the trophy and winners medals as the highest ranked of the two sides in the pool section.
Tarleton Coach, Steve Mann praised the county's formula. "We may have been knocked out in the Bowl semi-final but at the beginning of the season we had just five players, and little to focus on."
"The early round-robin stages gave us an opportunity to recruit, and today we have come with a full side, the boys have enjoyed a great day out with their families. We can now build on this for next season", he said.
Footnote: A positive report regarding the Southport player who went to hospital in the ambulance with neck injury. He was checked over, X-rayed etc and discharged with a bruised and stiff neck only. Advised to take it easy for a bit!
On behalf of Southport's coach, Tony Tarbuck, the Southport players and parents, grateful thanks are conveyed via the website to all those who assisted, particularly the (unknown) consultant from Blackburn and Mark Robinson, a paediatrician from Bolton who also doubles as Bolton's Under 12s Coach.
