28.10.07 - Lakenham Ladies 17 - 17 Carlisle
Lakenham Hewett Ladies drew their latest Championship 1 north game 17-17 against Carlisle. The game started at a frenetic pace with the home side putting the visitors under pressure, although thy failed to capitalise on some initial chances some excellent handling from Lakenham saw them score out wide with a try from winger Jo Wood.
Buoyed by the score the Norwich side maintained their pressure, but against the run of play Carlisle scored through their full back, which was converted. Some in discipline in front of the posts led to the visitors going further a head with a penalty, so that at half time the score was 10-5. In the second half Lakenham had to reorganise themselves after an injury to centre Kate Hodgkinson forced her to leave the field.
The game developed into a fairly even contest and only some heroic tackling kept the both sides from scoring. However some strong srcummaging from Lakenham put Carlisle on the back foot and some strong running from full back Dawn Manhertz saw her go over to even the scores at 10-10. The home side pushed on and from a lineout more slick handling from Lakenham backs saw Dawn Manhertz go over for her second try, which was converted.
With only a few minutes left Carlisle attacked hard, but some valiant, determined defence from Lakenham couldn’t stop them scoring in the dying seconds of the game. Carlisle equalised through a brilliant, if lucky kick from their fly half, the game ending 17-17. Although this was a game Lakenham could and perhaps should have won, they can pride themselves on a gritty, determined performance, but still have a lot to work on this week before their next game away to Vale of Lune.

16.09.07 - Lakenham Ladies 7 - 19 Waterloo
Lakenham Hewett Ladies put in a gallant performance in a close game against their Championship 1 North opponents Waterloo, but lost 7-19. On a blustery day the home side played against the wind in the first half and for the first few mins of the game put pressure on Waterloo. But with the wind behind them the visitors managed to kick up the field into a stronger position.
From a shortened line out they got the ball out quickly to their backs, went over the line, but a tackle by Ang Wadham prevented the winger from grounding the ball. After that Waterloo seemed to be camped in Lakenham’s half, but some solid defence kept the visitors out and strong scrummaging put them on the back foot. However just before half time the Waterloo winger crossed the line for a try near the posts, which was converted. Lakenham started the second half with renewed confidence; more big hits from forwards Trish Opie, Shelly Kightly and player of the match Charlotte Sayce literally knocked the wind out of the visitors.
However Lakenham again seemed to be defending, eventually conceding two tries in 10 mins, only one of which was converted. Never ones to give up though and with fresh legs from their last two remaining subs, Lakenham battled on. Using the forwards to drive a now tired Waterloo back, the home side attacked the line with ruck after ruck. Finally scrum half Rachael Glanville found a gap and dived over for the try, which was converted by Ang Wadham. Lakenham didn’t go away empty handed as the last gasp try earned them a consolation losing bonus point. Next Sunday they are away to Camphill.
