Year Summary - 2004
By Stephen McCormick
Preston
Grasshoppers ended their 17-year stay in the
National Leagues with relegation into Powergen North One finishing seven points
from safety in 12th place.
If the new
points scoring system that is going to be introduced for the new season was in
place they would have finished on 29 points, two clear of Dudley Kingswinford
who would have dropped into the relegation zone.
Outside the top
four clubs Hoppers scored four tries in a match more than any other sides in the
division. They also lost the most matches by less than seven points doing so
eight times in the season.
The kicking
department let Preston down whilst in the try scoring department Oliver Viney
made a tremendous start to the season but fell out of form later in the season,
he ran in 16 tries with 13 of these coming before Christmas. In his two seasons
of league rugby he has scored 35 tries in 49 starts.
