What is HMS Exeter
All of HMS EXETER's rugby team live and work on the ship. You can read
some details about her below.
HMS EXETER is a Type 42 Destroyers and forms part of the backbone of the
Royal Navy's anti-air capability. It is equipped with the Sea Dart medium range
air defence missile system, which in its primary role is designed to provide
area air defence to a group of ships, although it is also effective against
surface targets at sea. In addition to their role as an air defence platform
EXETER is able to operate independently carrying out patrol and boarding
operations, recently enforcing UN embargoes in the Mediterranean as part of a
NATO taskforce.
The ship was launched in 1979 by Lady Mulley and entered service in 1980. She
is the 5th Ship to bear the name EXETER, her predecessor being famous for her
role in the battle of the river plate and the sinking of the German "pocket
Battleship" the Graf Spee on 13 Dec 1939. The current EXETER saw service in the
Falkland Island War in 1982.
EXETER has proud and long links with the
City of Exeter and has many affiliates associated with the City.
