HMS Exeter Rugby Club
"To play, enjoy, promote and develop rugby football maintaining a team spirit
within the traditions of Royal Navy"
HMS EXETER runs one team from a crew of 250 sailors. We aim to play games
whenever we are in port. These games are often against local opposition and the
standards vary considerably, sometimes we find ourselves against national
standard players in some of the developing rugby nations. While in our homeport
of Portsmouth and any other Naval Base we arrange matches with other ships as
our programme allows. The ship intends entering 2 Royal Navy Competitions, the
Midi Ships Cup, a cup for all frigates and destroyers and the Royal Navy Sevens
held at HMS COLLINGWOOD in September.
Any player that proves himself good enough is encouraged to go forward to
play for representative teams within the Navy. First step is the Portsmouth
Command Team enter in the Command Championships, then onto the Royal Navy
Development Squad, however the pinnacle of any service player is to be capped by
playing in the Inter Service Tournament against the Army and RAF for the Royal
Navy. Additionally for the younger players there are representative
opportunities at Under 21 level and for the old stalwarts there is the Veterans.
HMS EXETER has representatives at all levels serving onboard from full Navy Cap
to Under 21 and RN Women.
The main aim of HMS EXETER Rugby Club is to enjoy playing the greatest game in
the world by giving as many of the crew as possible the opportunity to develop their skills.
By travelling the world we are in a unique position to meet and develop players
from some of the newer rugby playing nations and spread the Rugby gospel.
