Gainsborough All Blacks18 Bourne 17
Having made a very good start to the season Gainsborough wee looking to see what would happen today, Bourne pulled out of the league shortly after the Gainsborough side and in general terms for similar reasons. As often happens when organisations are experiencing difficulties ex members find a little extra energy to help and it certainly appeared that some of Bournes ex members had started to assist and help the club again. This Lincolnshire Merit table competition gives all the clubs the opportunity to play at their own level and this set up is benefiting both clubs both teams having won their two previous fixtures.
Bourne came and showed they are a strong forward team and well organised in forward play dominating that side of the competition from the first minute, the home side were not allowed to settle and could not get hold of any good ball to feed the backs, this pressure resulted in Bourne crossing the line but not touching down cleanly, the resultant 5 metre scrum saw Gainsborough try to run the ball out of defence players were caught, Bourne kept the ball and crossed the line for the first points of the game after 7 minutes, the try was not converted Bourne 5 Gainsborough 0.
Bourne continued to pressure the Gainsborough line with the home side working hard in defence, what little ball they managed to get their hands on they tried to run out of defence but they were under so much pressure Gainsborough seemed to lack ideas for attacking play, their usual fast wingers were getting no ball to run with. The Bourne pressure brought the inevitable reward and on 30 minutes went over for a try again working the ball close to the forwards. Credit to the All Blacks they did not give up, continued to tackle well, good defence by Hooton and good handling and tackling skills from prop forward Dan Hickson helping to keep the visitors at bay until half time. Gainsborough had opened their points account at the end of the half when Shaun Parker slotted over a penalty to give the home side some hope for the second half.
Early changes in the second half saw the all blacks have Albert parker and Austin Huntley perform in the backs and Andre Russell in the forwards, the home side did take some control of the game and were rewarded with a penalty, more changes to the team, Hooton came of for Dallon Ryan and Goude was replaced by Mark Lingard. The game now was very even the fresh legs of Gainsborough against the experience of Bourne, Mitchell and O Conner entered the field for the home side after 25 minutes of the half. Scoring opportunities came from good breaks by Hickson the ball was now being used by the backs, Huntley was joining the line, in one of these breaks he released Albert parker who touched down and Gainsborough led for the first time in this match. 11 – 10. The last ten minutes were frantic, Bourne took advantage of uncertainty following a quick penalty and scored a try to go back in front by 6 points 11 – 17 Within 2 minutes of the final whistle Mike Collins gave Gainsborough their third consecutive win with a tremendous break and showing real pace to touch down in the corner, Shaun Parker converted, a kick taken under tremendous pressure to send the All Blacks home happy and Bourne disappointed.
Man of the match was Dan Hickson who had an outstanding game and is really settling into this side.
