Gainsborough 14 - 08 Bourne
Gainsborough RUFC said goodbye to a superstar and friend this week and honoured him with a dedicated performance at home to Bourne. Gainsborough played with spirit and pride in the All Black shirt yet again but this win was different, it was for 16 men, not 15. Gainsborough took to the field with a well balanced team and a game plan not normally associated with the home team but proved to be successful .The game started as a very tight encounter with both teams testing the others defences up-front and through the centres. The spirit that had driven them to success early in the season had re-surfaced and Gainsborough proved to be the stronger of the two teams in the first half with 70% possession, but due to the weather conditions favouring Bourne the first half ended the way it started, 0 - 0. The second half opened up with Gainsborough being presented with a penalty just in-side the ten metre line which presented Sean Parker with an opportunity for the first points which was slotted over to give Gainsborough a narrow lead. Bourne quickly rallied and hit town on the break and scored in the corner for a debatable try giving them a 5-3 lead. After a few strong words by Vernon Goude Gainsborough pushed back Bourne again and again with hard strait running from Ziggy in the centres and good Mauling from the pack which lead to two more penalties from Parker, and a great team try with Mark Ellis Snr over the line for a 5 pointer! Bourne answered with a drop goal after failing to breach the All blacks line making the score as it finished. Gainsborough 14, Bourne 8.
