Gainsborough All Blacks 24 Market Rasen 17
Gainsborough entertained local rivals Market Rasen on Saturday; this was the first meeting between the two sides this season and was again clear evidence that the withdrawal from the league was the correct decision for the All Blacks.
This was a genuine competitive game by two teams at a similar skill and ability level and from a spectators point of view the final outcome was always hard to predict.
Rasen came and tried to attack at every opportunity but it would be fair to say that Gainsborough had the bulk of the ball. The first score was against the run of play, Rasen broke from deep in their own half and touched down for an unconverted try to lead 5 – 0, The score shook the home side they dominated all facets of play up to the 20 minute mark when Rasen again scored a break away try, the ball flew through the Rasen backs and they touched down to go 10 points to 0 in front
The old Gainsborough side would have capitulated at this point but this team with its blend of old and new pulled itself together and kept attacking the visitors, Howard Russell crossed the line but the ball wasn't touched down, the constant pressure paid off and eventually following a well worked move in the backs Tom Bond scored for Gainsborough’s first points.
The game was now all Gainsborough, Wayne Sendall had a great run out of defence to get very close to the try line and again the constant pressure paid off for the home side, Gareth Wood touched down following good work by the forwards, Shaun Parker converted and the half time score was 12 – 10
The second half continued in the same spirited way over exuberance and criticism of the ref led to a Rasen player spending 10 minutes in the bin, Gainsborough were boosted by the arrival in the team following substitutions of Andy Dean, only well timed tackles by the visitors kept him at bay but he made many yards prior to Tom Bond scoring his second try converted by Shaun, Andy then got himself on the score sheet bursting through three Rasen players before touching down for another try that was again converted.
Rasen would not lie down and continued to attack whenever the opportunity presented itself and they did score another converted try before the end of the game to make the final score 24 – 17.
Next Saturday 1st March presents the All Blacks with a big test away at Horncastle, the side now appears to be much improved and it is hoped that they can defeat Horncastle who have beaten them twice already this season in the two cup competitions, it is hoped that we can take a strong squad and continue in winning ways.
Both pictures show good work by the Gainsborough Forwards
