Ollerton 2nds 5 Gainsborough All Blacks 17

The All Blacks travelled to Ollerton on Saturday for a pool game against old adversaries on a very warm afternoon. The team prepared for the game and were led out of the dressing room by Shane Ellis who was playing on his 50th birthday. Shane has played for the club from the age of 16 and must now have played in excess of 1000 games for the club but unfortunately we do not have records to prove this fact.
Ollerton were a more experienced side than Gainsborough and from the kick off they made this experience tell, straight from the kick off they kept the ball close and as throughout the whole match ran it back through the forwards. It took the visitors a little time to counteract this and Ollerton took an early lead crashing over the line for an unconverted try to go 5 points to nil in front. The All Blacks responded immediately, Ollerton kicked forward the ball was gathered by Tom Bond, ran the ball back at the opposition, off loaded to Spencer before the ball came out to debutant Michael Collins who went over for a try, 5 – 5 after 6 minutes but that was the end of the scoring for the first half. Gainsborough had a lot of possession, they ran at every opportunity, Ollerton had sound defence and the teams turned round honours even.
Gainsborough kicked off for the second half in purposeful mood continuing to run the ball releasing their young backs as often as possible, there was early reward for this effort with Elliot Humphries going over for his third try in two weeks. Whilst Gainsborough were only one score in front they dominated the territory and were only vulnerable to a break away try, changes were made to the side on what was a hot day, Richard Tooke was replaced by new second row Darren Gagg, Andre Russell replaced Mathew Spencer, Dallan Ryan replaced birthday boy Shane Ellis and Nathan Mitchell came on for Rob Morley. The fresh legs eventually paid the dividends Coach Harry Sampson had been looking for, Mike Collins broke from his own half the ball was spun out to Matt Hulley who capped a fine personal performance with a try, converted by Shaun Parker 35 minutes of the 2nd half played and at last the All Blacks had some breathing space. Daniel Dodsley was the man of the match this week a sound back row performance, good support for the backs going forward and some superb tackles to keep Ollerton at bay. This was another good performance by the All Blacks, new players keep arriving and the total squad gets stronger and whilst we are still a few players short of being able to field two teams on a Saturday signs for the future look good.
The game this week is at home to Bourne 3.00pm kick off; all players are asked to meet at 1.30 for a coaching session before the match.
