Southwell 39 Gainsborough 14
Gainsborough All, Blacks travelled to Southwell on Saturday for the penultimate game of the season.
It was disappointing to note that after the success of recent weeks the number of available players was down and the resources available to Vernon Goude to put out a competitive side were pushed to the limits.
Gainsborough kicked off going up the slope and were soon defending against a large well motivated Southwell side, the visitors did this very well for the first fifteen minutes and totally shook the home side with a tremendous breakaway try by Wayne Sendall and a conversation by Shaun Parker.
Southwell hit back with 3 tries before half time taking full advantage of the slope and led 17 points to 7. Just as the turn round was about to happen Gainsborough got themselves together and worked well to score their second try. Tom Bond crashed over the line just reward for some very good play in the first half by the youngster. This was to be Toms 4th try of the season for the club and well deserved.
The second half kicked off without Andy Dean who is slowly recovering from a knee injury, this meant the others in the pack had to step up to the mark and good displays by Rob Morley Dallon Ryan and Howard Russell particularly kept the Gainsborough forwards in the game. Despite all this it was not possible to stop the Home side from scoring 4 tries in the half; they had large squad available and kept fresh legs on the pitch with role on and off substitutes.
Gainsborough played well have come a long way this season and next year if the improvement continues will be travelling to these away fixtures and returning to Gainsborough with a win.
Next Saturday 26th April
Gainsborough Rugby Union Football Club is to bring the curtain down on their season with the Presidents game to be played at the Castle Hills School with a 2.30 Kick Off.
It is now almost customary that Harry Sampson produces and manages a side to play against the current All Blacks who will be led by club captain Vernon Goude.
The game will be an even affair and the sides will play for the Mick Foot Trophy, after the match the social side of the event will be held at The Peacock on Corringham Road when the club will present its end of year trophies.
This year the Presidents game is again touched by the sad loss of one of the clubs stalwarts over the last year in Paul Bell and whilst a special memorial match will be held for Paul at the beginning of next season the game will start with a minutes silence in memory of Paul.
It is hoped that many Rugby supporters from the town will turn out to watch the game and celebrate with the players after the match.
