Boston 52 Gainsborough All Blacks 0
Gainsborough set off for their second successive difficult away fixture in this bank of 3 with changes yet again having to be made to the side due to late cry offs, but never the less still took a strong 17 to Boston. The All Blacks were pleased to welcome Mick Williams back to the squad for his first competitive match of the season. This is a fixture that as not taken place for a number of years due to the league system and it was another opportunity that the All Blacks would be measured against quality opposition
If the team had a known weakness before kick off it would be in the area of the half backs there is no back up for these positions when the first choices are not available and whilst the club is trying hard to recruit experienced players for these position it is clear that we are going to have to train and coach from within existing resources. For this game Daniel Dodsley had his first game at scrum half and captain Vernon Goude played fly half, both of these players came from the forwards it was clear then that this game would be more forward dominated.
Gainsborough won the toss and kicked with the elements, they were put under constant pressure by the home side, Boston exploited the half back weakness with their outstanding scrum half dominating large parts of the game, The All Blacks tried to create space for their fast wings Goude punting to the corners for the speed men to run on to but the Boston defence stood firm and managed to score 4 tries and convert two in this first half. to give them a 24 point lead at the turn around.
The second half was almost a re run of the first while the Gainsborough defence had to be at its best they did manage to make some breaks and cause difficulties for the home side. For Gainsborough the attacking running and outstanding tackling brought the man of the match award for Elliot Humphries who as been improving his game each week as the season as progressed. Boston scored 28 unanswered points to make the final score 52 – 0.
