Gainsborough Rugby Club continued its preparation for the new season by taking a squad of players to the annual Retford 7’s competition on Sunday.
Gainsborough were one of fifteen teams taking part in the competition in what is now a traditional pre season event and whilst all the players gave a good account of themselves and the event assisted with team building and general fitness this was never a competition that the All Blacks were looking to win.
Most of the players managed to score some points but it was good to see that Tom Bond has returned to the new season in the same scoring form from last year and loud cheers rang out from the Gainsborough contingent when veterans Andy Dean (Club Coach) and Paul Hooton both scored breakaway try’s and had to run the length of the pitch before touching down.
The club have continued to train throughout the summer months in an effort to ensure that they will be as fit as any of the opposition come the first week in September. Gainsborough will be participating in the Lincolnshire Merit league and the Lincolnshire and the NLD cup competitions, it is hoped that success in one or preferably all three of the competitions will lead to the eventual re entry in to the RFU league system.
Training continues on a Tuesday night at Castle Hills School from 6.30 and in an effort to improve training and attract additional players to the club Andy Dean and Vernon Goude have both successful undertaken a training course for coaches and have put their learning into practice with the Gainsborough team. New training aids are in the process of being purchased to supplement the substantial amount of other investment put in by the club in recent years. Vernon and Harry Sampson have both attended RFU training to learn the new law changes ( ELV’s) all this information will be passed to the players at coaching sessions as well as a full members meeting prior to the start of the season in earnest.
The first team ( The All Blacks) kick off on 6th September with a home game against Sleaford, Vernon and Andy ( Captain and Coach) are both pleased with progress to date and are looking forward to that first fixture. Any new member wishing to join the club or participate in the training will be welcome to attend on any Tuesday evening or to contact any committee member. Vernon Goude can be contacted on 01724 334433.
