Barton 36 Gainsborough All Blacks 14
Arranging this fixture and getting the game played has been difficult this week, the match should have taken place at Castle Hills but due the amount of rain this week the pitch was unplayable, The All Blacks asked Barton for a reversal of the home and away fixtures, that was agreed and then the referee was unable to attend due to ill health, given all that the preparation was not the best for the players.
There had to be some changes to personel because the change of venue meant that some players were not available for the 12.30 meet, Dodsley went to scrum half and Andy Dean came into the back row, Vernon Goude lost the toss on a cold day on a pitch that sloped both ways, Gainsborough started in their customary style up and at the opposition but they do lack the scoring touch when they have done all the hard work, Barton ground the All Blacks down, Andy Dean had to leave the field injured which resulted in some reorganising, Barton scored twice to go 14 – 0 in front at half time.
Bond had already come on for Dean and the second half started with Casey coming on for the injured Lingard, Gainsborough were now short of forwards and this is the area that Barton have always dominated in, Mark Waterland moved in to the back row and gave a man of the match performance in a position he had never played before, showing skills and strength in the tackle and good positive breaks.
Barton had the slope and wind advantage for this second half they made the advantage tell and quickly scored 3 tries at the beginning, But in usual All Blacks style with these young men back they came and first Dodsley and then Bond broke through the home defence to touch down, both tries were converted by Shaun Parker.
Barton did manage to score another try at the end of the game to make the final score 36 – 14 another good performance with the Man of the Match award going to Mark Waterland. Well supported by the every reliable Humphrey who tackles all day and Shaun Parker who is now one of the more experienced players in this squad.
Next week the All Blacks are in the pool and are waiting to see who the opposition will be but subject to the weather and availability of opposition are hoping for a home game, Vernon will contact players prior to the game.
