The Gainsborough All Blacks had another satisfying victory on Saturday when the entertained Boston 2nd XV. Boston are a side who have made great strides this season, their first team look like they will promoted in the new league structure, this second team gave the All Blacks a sound beating when we travelled to play them earlier in the season. It was also a successful day for Grant Bell who gave a superb all round display, scored two tries and walked away with the Man of the Match Award. Grant was a constant source of support to Andre Russell who was captain for the day encouraging and driving the players forward at every opportunity, along with sharp tackling when Boston were on the attack.
The game kicked off with Mathew Spencer replacing Vernon Goude at Loose head prop and with Albert Parker continuing to cover for injured son Shaun at fly half, the home side made all of the running, playing with the elements they soon set about wearing down the visitors, powerful scrummaging from Spencer, Shane Ellis and Mark Hildred ensured that Gainsborough won all of their own ball and some of the oppositions at set piece and Hildred and Bell made sure that the home side took most of the line out ball, all of this gave a good platform for the backs to make inroads into the Boston defence, Dawson, Chadwick and Humphrey all had powerful runs and all made ground.
The All blacks took the lead following a slicing run by Dawson, he was brought down with a high tackle from the resultant penalty Parker put the ball in the Boston 22, the resultant line out saw one of Gainsborough set plays the ball went from scrum half to Mark Hildred who stood at first receiver and crashed over for a try, the second try was from a Harry Sampson penalty move, again Boston were penalised following a superb run by Chadwick, Wood took the penalty the ball went to Bell via Russell and Bell touched down for the first of his tries. the final score of the half was scored by Dan Hickson who finished off another fine move that involved both Chadwick and Wood and Albert parker converted the try. 19 – 0 to the All Blacks.
The second half was much different Gainsborough had to play against the elements and by now the wind had become quite strong the only way for points to be scored would be with ball in hand, another break out of defence by Dan Hickson saw the ball go through the backs before reaching Sam Bennett who scored in the early minutes of the half giving the All Blacks a 24 point advantage. It seemed from this moment on that Boston were determined to spoil the party, they totally dominated play and with the elements they kept Gainsborough pinned in their own half, there was occasional breaks by Howard Russell, a field length run by Humphrey but most of the possession and territory were with the visitors. Chris Kent at fullback made several timely tackles to prevent the visitors from crossing the home line.
With very little time on the clock Gainsborough did mange to break free The Gainsborough backs took the ball forward to the first breakdown the forward took over from this point, Hickson moving forward, passed out to Bell who fittingly finished a fine performance with the last try. Albert Parker duly converted 29 - 0
