Gainsborough All Blacks 52 Lincoln 10 Saturday 11th April
Gainsborough fielded a very young and inexperienced side for the visit of local rivals Lincoln, the youngsters did very well but this game was typical end of season Rugby.
With many of the older players missing it also gave Aaron Dawson his first taste of captaincy along with giving the youngsters the opportunity to stake a claim in the starting line up for the Presidents game next Saturday.
The first 5 minutes was end to end both sides looking to establish priority and a platform from which to build a match winning performance, The All Blacks came under a little early pressure defending a scrum on their own 5Metre line but a quick penalty opportunity taken by Shaun Parker led to a big break out of defence by Dawson, it is always better playing in the opposition half and the first try came after Elliot Humphrey broke through the visitors defence passed the ball out down the left for a try by Sam Hirst.
Lincoln came back into the game following a penalty given when the home side back row broke off early, this was youthful enthusiasm but it resulted in Lincoln turning the pressure into points and making the score 5 – 5 by touching down on their left wing.
The All Blacks replied with a try by Shaun Parker who had the glory after Dan Hipkiss had made the hard yards, Parker converted his own try . Gainsborough went further in front when Gareth Wood touched down after selling a dummy and running through the middle, there then followed a big drive by Elliot who was having a very good game, Sam Hirst made a break and looked threatening every time he ran at the opposition, Dan Hipkiss benefited from one of these runs picked up a ball from Sam and crashed over to score giving Gainsborough a 24 – 5 advantage at half time.
2nd half began very scrappy and the home team gave away several penalties and lost some of their discipline, after 8 minutes they did get their act together and Daniel Chadwick scored the first points of the second half, Parker duly converted. The rugby continued to be end to end but the visitors were not able to touch down to score the points; Gainsborough defended well good tackling all-round but especially from the ever reliable Mark Ellis and man of the match Elliot Humphrey. Gainsborough scored again when Chadwick broke through for his second try. It was at this point that the changes to the side were made with all replacements being used. There then followed a period of energy sapping scrums a real test for the young side but they came through, and scored two more tries before the final whistle, both tries went to Daniel Dawson, his speed and determination constantly caused the visitors problems and the scores were a fair reward for his efforts.
Lincoln scored a consolation try before the final whistle a break away try to make the final score 52 – 10
The All Blacks just have two games to go to finish their season, next Saturday 18th is the Presidents game and the 27th sees the Rugby festival at Grimsby.
