Unfortunately it was more of the same in terms of the result this weekend, the Gainsborough Rugby Club are playing a good game of rugby, are continuing their development but have been unable to win last two outings. Kicking off in difficult blustery conditions the team took the field with a change at hooker , vice captain Nathan Mitchell came into the side and captain Vernon Goude was on the bench, neither of the experienced centres was fit to play so Eliott Humphrey took the inside centre berth with Tom Bond outside. Both players are good hard positive runners and both capable of breaking the gain line in attack and sound tackling in defence.
The game kicked off with the all Blacks taking every attacking option and totally dominating play, they continued to do this all the way through the first 40 minutes often camped on the opposition line and putting the visitors under enormous pressure but all the attacking and pressure counted for nothing because in all the 40 minutes the home side could not get on the score card, attacks came from the forwards and the backs but Rasen defended very well and the home side could not cross the line. What the Gainsborough side have to learn is when to get the ball out and when to go alone because there is no doubt that a greater team effort and more use of a passing game would have brought about some points. Rasen on the other hand could only get their attack going through breakaways, the difference in the two sides was that when the visitors did break they scored points, they scored three converted tries before half time and this meant that even with the elements it was always going to be difficult in the second half for the young all Blacks.
There is no doubt a combination of the elements and the tactics contributed to a much better second half for the home side. These young all Blacks never know when they are beaten, they chased and tackled for the full 80 minutes, good breaks from Chadwick and Humphrey put pressure on the Rasen line, Dawson never knows when he is beaten and runs every ball out of defence to start to attack the opposition. Rasen scored a good try through their forwards to add another 5 to their half time total and Gainsborough scored an excellent try through the forwards with Dodsley touching down after some excellent work from the forwards and Parker adding the two points for the conversion. Apart from these two instances the game was a midfield battle; it was good to watch for the small crowd and the last few minutes looked like Gainsborough would score again but that wasn’t to be and the final score was All Blacks 7 – Rasen 26.
Man of the match was Mark Hildred who had an outstanding game and is a good example to the younger players around him.
