Scunthorpe VI 10 Gainsborough 12
Following the big defeat last week and the sad news of Paul Bells death on Friday it would not have been surprising if the team had not turned up on Saturday, but that is not the way with this new look side.
The club was shocked and saddened to hear of the death of a past stalwart of the All Blacks side and it is right that nothing should be written in relation to Rugby in the town this weekend without mention of the contribution made to the club by the big man, Paul Bell. It was Paul who always ensured that everyone knew of events around the club he served as player, chairman and first team captain along with numerous other duties and he will be sadly missed by all involved. Good night, God Bless, rest in peace dear friend. A minutes silence was held prior to the start of the match.
Because of the suspension from last weeks game and the injuries there was always going to be changes for this game, Andy Dean was available and came into the squad along with Rob Morley, Mark Taylor and returning from injury Chris Synnott.
The match was certainly a game of two halves with Scunthorpe scoring two tries prior to the break to turn round 10 pints to nil in front. Gainsborough had to make one substitution in this half; Sam Hurst having to leave the field with a dislocated finger received carrying out a try saving tackle.
The second half was a different matter the windy blustery conditions where now in the All Blacks favour, the excellent team spirit throughout this side saw the players work as a unit to score two tries, one through Aaron Dawson and one through Andy Dean, Shaun Parker converting one of the tries to give Gainsborough the lead and eventual victory.
Club captain Vernon Goude stated that “ the biggest test for the All Blacks was the two strong running centres from Scunthorpe but our strength was our defensive work and team spirit “
This is another fine victory for the club, the third over the Scunthorpe side this week and makes it so much easier for us to put the disappointment of last week behind us.
All players are reminded that training continues with Harry Sampson coaching on Tuesday night at Castle Hills School, next weeks game is a home match against Cleethorpes it is 3.00pm KO but a pre match training session is being organised for 1.30.
