Supporting the Women's Rugby Community
During the 2007/8 season Five Ways Women's team provided players to Bournville, Leighton Buzzard, Mellish and Sutton Coldfield to enable them to fulfill their fixtures and to develop our players skills. This year we plan to help out other teams within our Development League, and again, Sutton Coldfield.
Five Ways Women's Rugby is represented on the North Midlands Women's Rugby Forum.
3 Development Days are to be held at Five Ways RFC for any Midlands developing teams. These will be core skills based and an excellent opportunity to learn from some of the top coaches in the Midlands:
Sunday 28th September 1pm-4pm
Sunday 19th October 1pm-4pm
Sunday 16th November 1pm-4pm

Five Ways Old Edwardians ladies: 4
Sutton Coldfield: 41
The Ladies team kicked off the Club Grand Opening celebrations in a friendly match against friends and occasional comrades, Sutton Coldfield Ladies. As they also had a league fixture the following day, Sutton only managed to bring 8 along so 2 of our girls donned green shirts in order for us to play 10's. There was some good stuff, some not so good stuff, and a fair bit of laughing!
The return fixture in February will hopefully be a much more balanced affair and we shall aim to prove our worthiness to enter the Midlands 2 West North League for next season

Sutton Coldfield Ladies: 64
Nuneaton Ladies: 25
4 of our girls helped Sutton Coldfield to their first win of the season away at Nuneaton. Joy Potter scored 4 tries and Hanna Wride scored one. Thanks to Laura Hill for being brave enough to play prop for the first time, and congrats for not getting concussed for once! Clarisse Smith also put in a valiant effort at second row, taking time out from her busy schedule of sun-bathing - check out the tan lines next time you see her!

Five Ways Old Edwardians Ladies: 20
Lutterworth Ladies: 12
A fair weather day welcomed the intrepid teams to their first match of the 2008/09 season. The Five Ways girls gratefully welcomed the Sutton ladies who volunteered to help out on this occasion.
Having won the toss the kick from Jane Willis saw Ways off to a good start. They battled towards the tryline from the word go against a strong Lutterworth defence. After a good 5 minutes Lutterworth took the ball and began to make moves up the pitch, some strong forwards play , a quick ball to the backs saw Lutterworth run in the first try of the game bringing the score to 5-0.
Willis made another good kick and Ways fought back, powerful pick and drive rugby from Ways allowed Charlie Cund to get her hands on the ball and muscle over the line for the first Five Ways try of the season. 5-5 at the end of the first quarter.
The visitors had no reply as their restart failed to make the 10m line, Ways took the scrum and were shocked by the power of the Lutterworth ladies temporarily putting them on the back foot. It took some arduous defensive work to keep Lutterowrth out of the scoring zone, a double movement over the line relieving the pressure on the blues defence and a good kick from Lisa Hill got them out of the 22.
A great run from Charlie, a pass to centre Miriam Toolan and then back inside to fullback Lizzie Meade displayed some good backs work and surprisingly the try was called by the ref - on the 5m line! Not to be distracted by the disruption in play the amber and blues powered through their attacking scrum, a good pick-up from no.8 Lisa and strong support from the back row formed the impetus needed for Miriam to score the 2nd try, 10-5 at half time.
Five ways came out strongest after the half time break and the pressure was again on the Lutterworth defence. Lutterworth failed to clear their lines, the Five Ways forwards who competed strongly in the rucks all day secured quick turnover ball and a pleasing backs move saw the ball pass through numerous hands to leave Charlie to stroll to the line for her second, and Five Ways' third try.
From the kick off the Lutterworth girls fought back hard. Using many rolling mauls they trundled towards the tryline and despite some great tackling by debutant Fred Townson they managed to secure their second try with a conversion bringing the score to 15-12.
Not to be outdone Ways pressured the retrieval of the kick and came back hard. A great steal from Joy Potter provided the backs with the ball they needed for debutant Lizzie to surge through the midfield and over the line.
Sadly, at this point the game changed. Weary bodies gave way to frustration in the opposition's camp and an injury to one of the visitors heralded the decision that they no longer wanted to play. After much discussion and attempts at persuasion the game was forfeited at 20-12 to the home side and a proud and yet confused Five Ways team clapped the visitors off the pitch unclear as to why the game had stopped.
In spite of the early stoppage the Five Ways ladies should be proud to have beaten a team such as Lutterworth and march with their heads held high into the rest of the season.
Special mention goes to Fred and Lizzie and Katie (Our prop) for playing their first games, and first game in the blue and amber strip, and thanks to Sutton for the loan of their players.
Welcome back to Laura and Miriam and lets hope the rest of the season goes as well as this game.
Good Luck Ladies!!
