Essex County RFU School of Rugby
Important information
The Essex County RFU School of Rugby is an opportunity for elite rugby players from U-13 to U-16 to further develop their core skills. The 2009/10 programme will be run during the summer holiday and the October half term break. It is an intensive programme of player development conducted by the county’s leading coaches.
It is important for coaches, players and parents to understand that the School of Rugby is not in itself a means of achieving representative honours for Essex. It is about developing individual skills in an environment where players can benefit not just from the best coaching, but also from training with their peers at the best available facilities. The School of Rugby is an innovative and rewarding experience.
Selection for the School of Rugby is based strictly on an assessment of a player’s core skills. These include: -
· Running – as a ball carrier; receiver; support player
· Game understanding – including decision-making; communication and creativity
· Passing – technique; variation
· Contact skills – body position; ball carrying
The School of Rugby is not playing position specific, although we do request this information for our records. Up to 22 boys in each age group will be selected regardless of position.
Nominations for the School of Rugby trial are now sought in accordance with the following: -
U13 age group
(yr 8 in Sept ’09)
Players in this age group will be new to Essex rugby. A club or school may nominate a maximum of three players that they consider suitable based on the above assessment criteria.

U14, U15 and U16 age groups
(yrs, 9, 10 & 11 in Sept ’09)
A club or school may nominate a maximum of two players that they consider suitable based on the above assessment criteria.
If a player participated in the 2008-9 School of Rugby, or was part of a County development group, or the County match squad this season, their suitability for School of Rugby will be assessed independently of the trial and therefore these players should not be nominated.

Players not selected for the School of Rugby but have the potential to play representative rugby for the County, London Division and possibly England at U16 level, will receive additional coaching during the season as part of a development group to provide more exposure and opportunities for them to develop. These players, along with the School of Rugby students will form the basis of the County Representative XV’s but must have been through to nomination process.
