Durham
44 – 5
Essex
With quite a number of changes to the side beaten last weekend by Staffordshire the task for the Essex Senior Squad was not going to be easy this weekend.
Travelling up on the Friday to give the team the best possible preparation for the game seemed to pay off especially in the first twenty minutes of the match when
Essex
appeared to finally “got it together.”
The match began with a stiff breeze blowing across the pitch but slightly in
Essex
’s favour.
The pack were mauling well and the backs looked impressive.
Only determined defence kept the
Essex
side from opening the scoring.
Durham
’s first visit into the
Essex
half came about 10 minutes into the game.
A long kick out of defence took play to the Essex 22 where a penalty opportunity gave full back Simon Moore of Middlesbrough an easy three points and
Durham
the first points went quickly on the board.
Despite this set back Essex again put pressure on the
Durham
line and played the next ten minutes of the match mostly in the
Durham
half.
But then, a
t a lineout just inside the
Durham
22 the referee allowed play to continue without penalising
Durham
for having too many players in the line out.
Though Essex won the ball, a fumbled pass in the centre was quickly scooped up by
Durham
and the race for the Essex line was on, led by the
Durham
wing Oliver Brennand of
Durham
University
.
He outpaced the Essex backs to score in the corner and the try went unconverted to give
Durham
an 8 – 0 lead.
The try gave
Durham
a little more confidence and it was the turn of
Essex
to be on the defensive.
Despite some very determined defensive tackles it was the Durham Centre Rob McDermott, also from Durham University who scored the next try which was converted to make the score 15 – 0.
Though
Essex
tried desperately to get back into the game before half time there was no further score before the referees whistle went, for the break.
The second half began with Essex determined to pull the score back, but from a lineout in the
Durham
22,
Durham
moved the ball quickly out to their speedy winger Brennand who ran the length of the pitch to score his second try of the afternoon.
With the try unconverted
Durham
were now in the lead by 20 – 0 and gaining in more confidence.
The try was followed a few minutes later by a drop goal by
Moore
from the
Essex
22 to make the score 23 – 0.
There quickly followed another try this time by
Durham
winger Gareth Foreman and converted by fullback Simon Moore.
Being 30 points in the lead and half way into the second half
Durham
eased of the pressure and
Essex
were able to try and come back.
During several phases of
play Essex brought the game into the
Durham
half and twice, promising moves along the backs were thwarted short of the
Durham
line.
With ten minutes to go it was
Thurrock
’s Joe Bezuidenholm who linked up to take a pass from Darryl Worster to score a fine unconverted try on the left wing.
Durhams response was then to score twice more in quick succession before the referee blew for full time.
Manager Alan Stobbs said “ This was always going to be a tough game for us, with so many changes we had to make in the team at the last minute, I couldn’t have asked for any more effort or commitment from the boys who played in this game.
We have now got to get things back in order for next weeks match against
Leicester
at Barking.”
