The Essex Youth Leagues were set up by Peter Rains of Woodford RFC on behalf of Essex County RFU to provide a competative structure to youth matches in the County. Their was some intitial reluctance to do this by some clubs as they felt it inhibited the playing of the game for all. The County agreed with this view, however, there was still a clamour for league competition.
The County therefore agreed that it would set up the leagues so that there would be no more than Seven or eight league dates in the season. This allowed for County matches, friendlies and training to take place in accordacne with the RFU Structured Season.
This structure would therefore help to overcome some of these reservations and players who would not normally be selected as first choice would still be encouraged to take part in the game and develop their skill in the hope that one day they would become first choice or just play the game for the sheer fun and enjoyment of it.
