ESSEX U17 - 2009/10
To bring you up to date with the current system which is in place within the RFU, I would bring to your attention how the age selection system works at U17 and 18. The effective date for age qualification is the 31st December.
Therefore the programme for u18’s in the County begins in the January of the season preceding the U18’s inter-County graded games which take place during the months of October and November. These matches enable London Division to make its selections for the Regional festival matches which take place in late December from which the England U18’s AER squad is selected for an international tournament in the following March.
There is an opportunity for exceptional players on this pathway to be seconded into the England U18 National Development squad. Identified players can then also proceed into the England U20’s in the following years.
UNDER 17 (2009/10 season)
This applies to all players ‘currently falling into the category of being aged Under 18 on the 31st December 2008 (Year 12/Lower sixth)
Those players that represented Essex at Under18 level, who would still be eligible for the 2009/10 seasons, will not initially be required to trail at stage 1.
Stage 1 trials are for all players who have not previously represented the County and/or in the opinion of their club, school or college coach have improved to such an extent that the coach believes that they have reached the required County standard. Individuals cannot be accepted without such endorsements by their coaches unless exceptional circumstances exist. The management team will also consult with the club/school coaches involved with U17’s league and friendly matches to assist in the selection process
Stage 2 trials will begin with those selected from stage 1 trials coming together with those players who have represented the County or been selected for London Division at U16 in the previous season or are already playing representative rugby at U18.
.
No development side runs at U17 or 18 ages so a squad of 28/30 will be selected to train and be coached as per the programme as set out below.
